LA JOLLA, Calif.—The UC San Diego swimming and diving team cruised past Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the Tritons’ 2021-22 home opener. The men earned a 164-123 victory, while the women came out on top 173-119 on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
MEN
The men swept the 200- and 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke and the team of Nathan Lee, Josh He, Spencer Daily and Mitchell Stoddard took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:32.24.
It was a strong day for Tyler James, Luke Pusateri and Hayden Johnson who all earned multiple first-place finishes. James took first in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, while Pusateri finished first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Johnson took home first-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard freestyle.
Additionally, Ivan Kurakin placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:18.53. Zack Reuter took the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.78 and Devin Esser took the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:38.59. Spencer Daily placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.09.
Kyland Parenti earned first place in the men’s 1-meter competition with a score of 253.50.
WOMEN
The women swept five events on the day including the 1000-, 500-, 100- and 50-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard backstroke.
The Tritons took first and second in a thrilling 200-yard medley relay with times of 1:48.22 and 1:48.26. The top squad consisted of Alana Barthel, Madison Mitchell, Teagan Monroe and Juli Arzave, while the second-place team was Mackenzie Lee, Katja Pavicevic, Josi Platalla and Josette Odgers.
Jordan Phillips placed first in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle, while Miranda Renner took the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly. Ellie Whitney also took home two victories, placing first in the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle.
Sophie Francis finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.01, while Tina Reuter took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.99. Alana Barthel took first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.57 and Jojo Odgers placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.15.
In the women’s 1-meter competition, Isabella Perez placed second (229.20) and Jasmyn Cheng took third (222.85).
UP NEXT
The Tritons will remain home to begin MPSF competition with back-to-back meets hosted at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The UC San Diego women will play host to UC Davis on Oct. 30 at 12 p.m. (PT) and both the men and women will compete against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. (PT).

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Kelly Prawira won the 200-yard breaststroke by almost six seconds, and Emma Ng Pack won the one-meter dive, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team opened up its 2021-22 season at Division I UC San Diego on Saturday.
UC San Diego earned the team win by a final score of 173-119, as CMS gave itself a tough opening test against a Division I program in its first meet in 19 months since winning the SCIAC Championship in 2020, but the Athenas showed strong potential in its debut event despite the defeat.
Prawira finished the 200 breast in 2:20.63, winning by a substantial margin over second-place Gabi Icheva of UC San Diego (2:26.58). Her effort also places her sixth in CMS history in the 200 breast after her first collegiate competition. She also finished second in the 100 breast in 1:06.14, followed by teammates Augusta Lewis and Rachel Wander in third and fourth.
Ng Pack, meanwhile, earned 238.30 points to take first place in the one-meter dive, edging out Isabella Perez of the Tritons by just over nine points (229.20).
Ella Blake, the 2019-20 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year, gave a strong effort in the 200 free, coming in second with a time of 1:56.61. Katelyn Dang was also a close second in the 100 fly, finishing in 57.27, less than a half-second behind Miranda Renner of UC San Diego in 56.91.
CMS will be at home at Axelrood Pool the next two weekends, first holding its annual exhibition against the alumni on Oct. 30.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s swimming and diving team gave itself a tough initial test in its first meet in 18 months, squaring off against Division I UC San Diego, and the Stags fared well in a 164-123 defeat in its first action of the 2021-22 season.
In fact, the first individual swim of the season provided a strong highlight as Lucas Lang finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 9:33.46 in an NCAA “B” cut time which places him second in program history behind Ben Culberson’s 9:24.23 in 2017. He also won a neck-and-neck battle to the wall for second place by a half-second over Jackson Bernstein of UC San Diego.
Frank Applebaum was an individual winner in the 100 fly, clocking a time of 51.42. while Jack Griffith took first in the three-meter dive with a score of 256.50.
Nick Tekieli also put his name in the CMS top 10 lists in his first swim, placing fourth in program history in the 100 back with a second-place finish in 50.21. Walter Limm had a solid second-place finish in the 100 breast in 57.56.
