ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy swimming and diving teams combined for 22 event victories during a sweep by the Mids of Johns Hopkins and Towson.  Navy (2-1) won the men’s meets by scores of 191-107 over Towson (0-1) and 200-92 over Johns Hopkins (0-3).  In the women’s dual, the Mids (2-1) posted a 170-122 victory over the Tigers (1-1) and a 196-87 win over the Blue Jays (1-2).

“I was very happy with the way we raced this evening,” said Navy men’s swimming head coach Bill Roberts.  “Everybody has been working extremely hard this season, especially over the last few weeks.  Our team did not let that faze them tonight.  We were able to drop time from last week in many events, as well as just get a lot of races in which is really important at this time of year.  We look forward to returning to training and competing again next week.”

“We are very pleased with how we performed in our first home meet of the year,” said Navy women’s swimming head coach John Morrison.  “We had some things to work on after last week’s meet at Penn State, and the team really made the most of our training this week to do just that.”

Four Mids totaled a pair of individual event wins during the meet.  The first one to accomplish the feat was Martina Thomas (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark.).  Her first victory came in the 200 freestyle as her effort of 1:51.57 gave her the win by 3.6 seconds.  Thomas opened the second half of the meet by winning the 100 freestyle in a time of 51.78.

Caleb Mauldin (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.) was the next Mid to win a second event.  He initially touched the wall first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.70, then earned the gold medal in the 100 backstroke thanks to his clocking of 1:51.70.

Sydney Harrington (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) followed with victories in the 200 butterfly (1:59.38) and the 500 freestyle (4:59.86).  She won the former race by six seconds and the latter by three seconds.

Garrett McGovern (So., Nashville, Tenn.) won the first individual event of the men’s meet, the 1650 freestyle by 17 seconds with a clocking of 15:32.77.  He would go on to win the 500 freestyle by over six seconds with a time of 4:31.58 to become the fourth and final multiple-event winner for the Mids.

Navy totaled wins in three of the four diving events.  Zach Peng (Fr., Oakton, Va.) edged teammate George Moore (So., New Canaan, Conn.) for the victory in the men’s one-meter contest by eight-hundredths of a point (266.48 to 2:66.40), Moore would win the three-meter event by 22 points with his score of 308.85 and Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.) won the women’s three-meter board by 29 points with her score of 289.73.

Additionally winners for Navy in the women’s meet were Megan Murphy (Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) in the 100 backstroke (56.57), Riley Gavigan (So., East Setauket, N.Y.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.19), Sarah Sorensen (Sr., Gainesville, Fla.) in the 50 freestyle (24.06), Elly Deas (Jr., Johns Creek, Ga.) in the 100 backstroke (2:04.13) and Theresa Milio (So., Scarsdale, N.Y.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.77).

“With leadership by seniors Martina, Sydney and Sarah, it was awesome to see the freshmen continue to make strides,” said Morrison.  “Overall, it was a terrific team win over very good Johns Hopkins and Towson teams.”

The remaining Navy men’s team winners were Conor Cranfield (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) in the 200 freestyle (1:40.33), Jonah Harm (So., Placerville, Calif.) in the 100 butterfly (48.32) and Evert Andrew (Fr., Wilmette, Ill.) in the 400 individual medley (3:59.51).

The Navy women’s team also won both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay events and the Navy men’s team won the 200 medley relay race.

Navy will be back in Lejeune Hall Saturday, Oct. 23, when the Mids play host to UMBC.
