Ben Kutufaris from Springfield, Pennsylvania has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Alabama beginning in the fall of 2023.
“I am honored to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at The University of Alabama! I’d like to thank my family, coaches, teammates, and future coaching staff for all their support. Roll Tide!! I chose Alabama because of their top notch facilities, great team, and amazing coaching staff. I believe that we will contend for conference and national titles each year and I am so excited for what the future holds!”
Kutufaris is a junior at Malvern Preparatory School where he swims and plays water polo. He grew up playing football and basketball, running track, and swimming, and only just dedicated himself full-time to the latter during his sophomore year of high school. And yet, the multi-faceted athlete (he is a varsity letter winner in Water Polo and Track & Field at Malvern Prep) has been named to the NISCA All-American Team in both of his high school seasons. As a sophomore, he had top-ten finishes at the 2021 Eastern Interscholastic (Virtual) Championships in the 50, 100 and 200 free and was tabbed First Team All Mainline and First team DLN.
Swimming for his club team, Ridley Area YMCA Stingrays, Kutufaris finished 6th in the 200 free, 8th in the 100 free, and 9th in the 50 free at the 2021 YMCA National Festival Meet. He won the 50/100 free and placed third in the 200 free at the 2021 Inter-Ac Championships.
Kutufaris is a USA Swimming Futures qualifier in the 50/100/200 free, and making great strides in other events, too. He will join the Alabama class of 2027 with Connor Carlile.

Why would this kid commit this early with these times? I gets he’s an athlete and new to swimming but like what? Is anyone else just confused
He is a 6’4 freak athlete who just started full time swimming. I think he’ll be ok.
Recruiting is pretty much done on what you have done though. Like those times are eye popping. This is like a mid major recruit at best.
I don’t even think most of the Ivy’s would give support in admissions to someone with these times. Realistically, in 2021 these are the types of times that high academic D3’s (like MIT, UChicago, WashU, JHU) are looking to recruit.

To Hoosier Daddy – How big of a giant POS can you be to rain on this kid’s parade? It’s already pretty gutless to troll around and spread your negativity but you’ve taken it to a new level. Strong program, weak program, DI or NAIA any student athlete furthering their career in college should be applauded. Anyone who was actually a swimmer knows that.
