Maggie MacNeil Blasts 55.30 Canadian Record in SCM 100 Butterfly

2021 FINA WORLD CUP – BERLIN

Maggie MacNeil earned gold at the FINA World Cup in the women’s short course 100-meter butterfly, at the same time setting a new Canadian record with a time of 55.30. The previous record was 56.15, set by Katerine Savard in 2016.

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom owns the world record at 54.61. MacNeil’s time is the third-fastest in the world this season behind Kelsi Dahlia’s 55.22 and Louise Hansson’s 55.26.

MacNeil swam the event in Day 3 finals of the World Cup, held in Berlin, Germany. Earlier in the day, she set the Canadian record in the women’s 50 butterfly with a time of 25.13. The Olympic Champion now has four Canadian records — the short course 50 and 100 meter butterfly, the short course 50 meter backstroke, and the long-course 100 meter butterfly.

Three of those Canadian records were set at the World Cup, including the two butterfly events swum Sunday, and the backstroke event swum Saturday. The long-course record comes from MacNeil’s gold-medal swim at the Tokyo Olympics.

In the 100 butterfly finals, MacNeil swam over two seconds better than she did in prelims, when she qualified with a time of 57.51. She found good competition in finals with Sweden’s Hansson, who came in second with a time of 55.49.

MacNeil is a senior at the University of Michigan, so she is not competing with the International Swimming League this season — her Berlin swims will certainly boost her stock for potential future seasons, however. She’s one of the top swimmers in the NCAA, and in 2021, became the first woman to break 49 seconds in the 100-yard fly (48.89).
