When she set the record in December 2020, Kirprichinikova became the first Russian woman to ever crack 16 minutes in the 1500 free. She lowered the mark by a significant margin as she beat Regina Sych‘s former record of 16:13.13. That time by Sych stood for more than a decade, having been set back in 2003.
Kirprichinikova has now been under 16 minutes a total of 3 times in her career, having hit a 15:58.98 to take gold in April 2021 at Russian Nationals. There, she was a full 40 seconds ahead of the second place finisher Aleksandra Khailova who was a 16:38.77.
Internationally, Kirprichinikova has represented Russia a number of times including back in 2015 at the World Junior Swimming Championships where she hit a 16:49.97 for 11th place overall. 2 years later she returned to World Juniors with a 16:22.96, advancing to 5th place overall. At the 2019 World Championships, she repped Russia again, hitting a 16:27.59 for 15th place. Most recently she raced at the 2021 European Championships in Budapest and notched a 16:01.06 for the silver medal, trailing Simona Quadarella‘s 15:53.59.
Kirprichinikova swam her national record at the Olympic Games alongside Quadarella of Italy who posted a 15:47.34 to place 2nd in heat 4 while Erica Sullivan swam a 15:46.67 for 1st. Kirprichinikova will advance into the 1500 free final in 5th place behind Sullivan’s 15:46.67, Quadarella’s 15:47.34, Katie Ledecky‘s top time and Olympic record of 15:35.35, and Wang Jianjiahe‘s 15:41.49 Asian record for the #2 spot.
One of the few Russians in good shape so far. Looks like many have peaked at Euros in May. Weird.
Most peaked for their Trials in April, Euros were already worse results-wise)
