- Day 2 Prelims Heat Sheet
This day 2 prelims session is simply bringing the heat, as we saw another major record drop by the wayside in the women’s 400m freestyle.
Taking 2nd place out of heat 3, Chinese swimmer Li Bingjie scored a big-time result of 4:01.57 to hit the wall behind leader Katie Ledecky of the United States. That garnered Li the overall 2nd seed, as well as an Asian continental record and Chinese national record for her effort.
Splitting 58.44/1:01.36/1:01.61/1:00.99, including a final 50m of 29.73, Li produced the fastest time of her career. Entering this meet, Li’s career-best 400m freestyle time rested at the previous Asian Record of 4:01.75. She logged that effort at the 2017 Chinese National Games.
As such, Li was able to slice .18 off of that previous result to make her mark already here with one more round of action to go.
Of note, the 4th, 5th and 6th place swimmers also broke national records, as 17-year-old Erika Fairweather took down storied swimmer Lauren Boyle’s New Zealand standard, 14-year-old Summer McIntosh checked in with a shiny new Canadian record and Germany’s Isabel Gose got it done for Germany.
