2021 U.S. Olympic Trials: 38% Men, 17% Women Faster than Day 2 Prelims Seeds

2021 U.S. OLYMPIC SWIMMING TRIALS

Day 2 Prelims Recap

Yesterday during the first U.S. Trials prelims session, only 30.8% of swimmers improved their meet seeds, including Michael Andrew‘s 58.19 men’s 100 breast American record. This morning, 25.8% of swimmers saw seed improvements in prelims. Breaking down both genders, 38% of male swimmers bested their meet seeds while 18% of female swimmers dropped time from their entry times over the past two prelims sessions.

Both the women’s 100 breast (9) and 400 free (7) had less than 10 swimmers each improve from their meet seeds. The women’s 100 back also saw a meager 12 out of 62 entries improve from their meet seeds. Highlighting the women’s 100 back was Katharine Berkoff, who was the only swimmer in the top-10 times to best their meet seed, breaking 59 seconds for the first time at 58.88. Later on, Bethany Galat (1:05.89) and Annie Lazor (1:05.82) broke 1:06 for the first time in the 100 breast while Paige Madden (4:05.92) and Haley Anderson (4:06.87) set lifetime bests in the 400 free. Both pairs are ranked within the top 3 semi-finals/finals seeds for their events.

Meanwhile on the men’s side, 18 swimmers in the 200 free and 25 swimmers in the 100 back dropped from their meet seeds, roughly 35%. Among the notable drops for the men, 17-year-old Nick Simons took a full second off his No. 41 seed of 55.51 in the 100 back to sky-rocket up to the 16th seed heading into tonight’s semi-final at 54.52. Likewise, Cal’s Bryce Mefford had a massive drop from 54.34 to nab the top semi-finals seed at 52.99.

Swimming the second-fastest time in the men’s 200 free and nailing a sub-1:47 lifetime best was Caeleb Dressel at 1:46.63, followed closely by Michigan’s Patrick Callan, who improved from 1:47.36 to 1:46.96 after scratching his No. 9 400 free seed yesterday.

Pretty impressive to me that more people are dropping time than in 2016, especially considering the lack of energy on deck.
