Efimova Describes 100-Focused Training Change Leading into Tokyo Olympic Games

2021 LEN EUROPEAN AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

We saw world champion Yulia Efimova in action at the 2021 European Championships, swimming a full lineup for her of 50, 100, and 200 breast, plus relays. She placed 3rd in the 50 (30.22), 4th in the 100 (1:06.33), and 3rd in the 200 (2:22.16). Afterward, she said she was happy with her swims after not having had a lot of racing practice in the last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She also explained what training will look like moving forward into the Olympics, stating that she won’t need to do a lot of the longer aerobic work she normally would since she will only swim the 100m breast individually.

Results across her career indicate she is a better 200m swimmer as does her stroke. With King, Pilato and more she looks unlikely to medal in the 100. Whereas she can beat them both in 200 easily and on her past form she could almost certainly have medalled in 200. That said training for 200 Breastroke isn’t fun.

It would probably take a 2:19 to win Gold in the 200 Breast in Tokyo with the likes of Schoenmaker and Renshaw already having set 2:20s this year
