Anton Chupkov earned his home country of Russia another Gold medal on the 4th day of swimming at these European Championships, roaring to victory in the men’s 200 breast. Chupkov tore to a 2:06.99, touching in a season best for the 24-year-old. The swim was not only a season best, it makes Chupkov the 2nd-fastest performer of the year, behind only Shoma Sato of Japan, who has been 2:06.40. Here is the current top 5 performers in the world for 2021:
Rank | Swimmer | Time | Country |
1 | Shoma Sato | 2:06.40 | JPN |
2 | Anton Chupkov | 2:06.99 | RUS |
3 | Zac Stubblety-Cook | 2:07.00 | AUS |
4 | Arno Kamminga | 2:07.35 | NED |
5 | Ippei Watanabe | 2:07.54 | JPN |
Chupkov is the World Record holder in the event, with his personal best of 2:06.12 standing as the top time in history. His 2:06.99 tonight marks his 5th-best performance in his career, and his 5th time under 2:07 in the event. Chupkov was just off his own European Championships Record of 2:06.80, which he set back in 2018. 2:06.99 now stands as the #14 performance all-time in the event.
I still sit in awe Everytime I watch his race plan. His closing speed blows my mind. Watching the contrast of an early speed swimmer like Sato against a closer like Chupkov is gonna be amazing.
that last 25m in Tokyo is gonna be absolutely insane.
This world record is going to be absolutely DEMOLISHED this summer, it seems like every other week someone’s going 2:07-2:06
Top 3 races this summer: 100 back, 200 breast, 200 free. The first two will likely have the two fastest fields ever and the 200 free has the potential to be the second fastest field behind only the 2009 worlds final
Im not as hyped on the 200 free. It will be faster than it has been in recent memory but not otherworldly
They’re either at trials or a major champ meet. I think it’ll be be broken but these times are being done one full rest and taper.
2:05.7 at Toyko, Daddy Chupkov don’t lose 🥵
Just watch as it’s going to take a 2:06 to medal this year
There were a lot of doubters after the time he posted at Russian trials. Another 2:06 swim and a European title should silence the reasonable ones. On a side note, Kamminga did a great job sticking with Chupkov in that last 50. Definitely made me sit up while watching the race.
Actually, now that I’m looking at the results, Kamminga outsplit Chupkov by .02 in that last 50…
