Seemanova Snares European Championships Gold In Czech Record

2021 LEN EUROPEAN AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

21-year-old Barbora Seemanova just ripped the fastest 200m freestyle of her career to clinch her first-ever European Championships title in an incredibly close race where the top 3 finishers were separated by only .15.

After claiming the top-seeded time of the semi-finals in 1:57.20, Seemanova of the Czech Republic engaged an entirely new gear to grab gold in a time of 1:56.27, blowing away that previous PB to bits en route to an emotional gold medal.

Opening in 55.78 and closing in 1:00.49, Seemanova and Italy’s Federica Pellegrini were neck-and-neck most of the race, with Great Britain’s Freya Anderson also in the mix. Seemanova’s 55.78 was the fastest front half by well over a second but Pellegrini came on strong, punching a last lap of 29.72, while Anderson was also quick in 29.44.

The last time a woman from the Czech Republic grabbed European Championships gold was when Petra Chocova took the top spot in the 50m backstroke at the 2012 edition of these Championships.
