Arizona State has posted a job listing for its open diving coach position, indicating that the school plans to resume the program after going a season without a coach.
Prior to the 2020-2021 season, Arizona State head coach Mark Bradshaw retired from the program, and all of the program’s divers either graduated or transferred (including at least some of their incoming freshmen). At the time, the program’s athletes said they were told that diving at Arizona State was “indefinitely terminated,” and Bradshaw said that the school “will not be supporting diving” during the 2020-2021 season.
Most of that happened in May, after the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but before the program announced in July that the school would redshirt its entire roster for the season because of the pandemic uncertainty. Ultimately, not having a diving coach for the season saved the program money in a year where they weren’t competing anyway.
The school at the time told SwimSwam that it was planning to hire a new head coach “as soon as [it] can after things return to normal.”
The job was posted within the last week, and a spokesperson for the school says that the plan is to have a new coach in place prior to July 1.
The Arizona State diving program has a long history of success at the national level, including 6 all-time NCAA Champions on the men’s side. The program’s most recent All-American is Youssef Selim, who finished his career in 2020 with 5 CSCAA All-America awards.
The most recent NCAA Champion is Joona Puhaka – the school’s only NCAA Champion in swimming or diving in the last 20 years. The four-time NCAA champion won the NCAA title in the 1m in 2003, the 3m in 2004, and both the 1m and the 3m in 2005.
According to public records, in 2019, Bradshaw’s salary was $82,782 while head coach Bob Bowman‘s was $250,000, and associate head coach Rachel Stratton-Mills made $84,000.

It won’t be to much longer that things unravel for Mr. Bowman and he’s again exposed for nothing more than a “personal trainer”.
