IRVING, Texas — University of Texas Men’s Swimming junior Daniel Krueger has been selected as the Big 12 Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday. Krueger was chosen as the award winner for the sport of Men’s Swimming and Diving based on the votes of each sport’s respective head coaches.

An electrical engineering major with a 3.8189 grade point average, Krueger is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 team selection (2020 and 2021) and a member of the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team.

In the pool, Krueger earned six All-America honors this season while leading the Longhorns to their NCAA-best 15th team title in program history. He swam the anchor leg on the winning 400-yard medley relay at the NCAA Championship meet, tied for second alongside teammate Drew Kibler in the 100-yard freestyle and swam the leadoff leg on the 400-yard freestyle relay that finished in fourth place. Krueger also swam the anchor leg on the 200-yard medley relay which registered a fifth-place showing, placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle and swam the leadoff leg on the 200-yard freestyle relay which finished in sixth place.

The Big 12 Conference established the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award during the 2012-13 academic year. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sport. Every Big 12 institution nominates a maximum of one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport. The coaches are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (athletic or academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 20 percent of the team’s scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year of residence at the institution.

Would rounding up that GPA to 3.82 have been an NCAA violation? Just wondering (and kidding).

Congratulations. This young man and Drew Kibler will be great role models for new swimmers this year.
