Hosszu swims 15 events in Bergen

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu show an incredible display of endurance, swimming 15 events and medaling in 14 of them at the Bergen Swim Festival which is held in the memory of Alexander Dale Oen. Dale Oen was a Norwegian star who won his country’s first Olympic Swimming medal in 2008, finishing second in the 100 breaststroke. He died suddenly from a heart attack which was caused by chronic, undetected coronary heart disease on April 30, 2012.

The competition was held in Bergen, Norway where athletes from many nations challenged each other in events swum in short course meters.

During the World Cup season Hosszu garnered a reputation of swimming an impressive number of swims at an individual competition did just that over the weekend. She competed in 15 events finishing first in the 200 freestyle (1:55.99), 200 butterfly (2:08.56), 100 IM (1:00.09), 200 backstroke (2:10.85), 400 freestyle (4:22.19) and the 200 IM (2:07.47).

She finished second in the 100 backstroke (59.44), 50 freestyle (25.55), 50 breast (31.96), 100 breast (1:10.01), 50 backstroke 27.82, 200 breaststroke (2:30.74) and the 100 freestyle (55.40). She also finished third in the 100 butterfly (58.75) and sixth in the 50 butterfly (27.64).

The Danish women also showed up ready to race. Mie Nielsen won both the 50 backstroke (27.64) and the 100 backstroke (58.13). Jeanette Ottesen Gray, who won each event she swam, the 50 freestyle (25.25), the 50 butterfly (26.66) and the 100 butterfly (57.36). Rikke Moller Pedersen also did her fair of winning by taking the 50 breaststroke (30.94), 100 breaststroke (1:05.38) and 200 breaststroke (2:19.56).

It was only fitting to see the best races on the men’s side being the breaststroke events. In the 50 South African star Cameron Van Der Burgh won in a time of 27.14. Van Der Burgh also took the 100 in a time of 57.82 while Daniel Gyurta of Hungary and Martti Aljand of Estonia battled it out for second with Gyurta coming out on top posting a 59.33 followed by Aljand who finished third in a time of 59.90.

In the 200 breaststroke Gyurta and Michael Jamieson had a great battle the entire race. Jamieson took the first 100 out in a time of  1:01.38 just 11 one-hundredths behind the Hungarian. By the 150 Gyura had made a significant move to take the lead in the race which he would never relinquish finishing first in a time of 2:06.48 with Jamieson finishing second posting a time of 2:06.84.

Katinka is one amazing swimmer. The number of events she is able to swim and do well in at various meets around the world is incredible. Seems like she never gets tired!
