Day Two Prelims: Thursday, April 8

The second session at 2021 Pro Swim Series – Mission Viejo (the women’s and men’s 800 freestyles took place earlier today) will consist of preliminary heats of the women’s and men’s 200 free, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 400 IM. Finals in those events will be swum on Friday morning. In flipping the traditional prelims-in-the morning, finals-at-night scenario, USA Swimming is beginning to get its athletes ready for the scheduling format for the Tokyo Olympics.

Two of the most anticipated events of the meet will take place tonight. In the men’s 200 free, Andrew Seliskar (1:45.71), Dean Farris (1:46.45), and Zach Apple (1:46.76) will be challenged by Patrick Callan (1:47.36) and Caeleb Dressel (1:47.31).

The elite of USA breaststroke, led by Lilly King (1:04.93), Annie Lazor (1:06.03), and Molly Hannis (1:06.43), will all be competing in the 100.

Dressel (49.50) and Seliskar (51.34) are also swimming in the 100 fly, along with Michael Andrew (51.33), Tom Shields (51.59), Nicolas Albiero (52.38), and Luis Martinez (51.44).

Melanie Margalis (4:32.53), Brooke Forde (4:36.06), and Madisyn Cox (4:37.23) are the headliners in the 400 IM. Charlie Swanson (4:11.46) and Sean Grieshop (4:13.90) top the charts in the men’s race.

Lisa Bratton won the first heat, coming from behind over the final 50 meters to touch in 2:02.96, her best time by 1.2 seconds. 16-year-old Macky Hodges of Mission Viejo qualified for Wave II with 2:00.00 in heat 2. She was followed by Amalie Mortensen (2:01.17) and Ashley Twichell (2:01.86).

Katie McLaughlin won heat 3 by .01 over Madisyn Cox, 1:58.30 to 1:58.31. Abbey Weitzeil had led for 150 meters from out in lane 7; she finished third in 1:58.65, her first time under the 2:00 mark.

Allison Schmitt outsplit the field in heat 4 over the third 50 with 29.9 to take over the lead. She won in 1:58.20, followed by Joanna Evans (1:58.43) and Hali Flickinger (1:58.49).

Katie Ledecky crushed the final heat with 1:55.40, moving to #2 in the world for the season. Emma Nordin touched in 1:58.51 for second. Leah Smith was third in 1:59.31.

Men’s 200 Meter Freestyle

Khader Baqlah led the men’s qualifiers in the 200 free with a heat 4 win in 1:47.91. Cristian Quintero was second in the heat with 1:49.72, while Jorge Iga finished third (1:50.56). Also swimming in heat 4 were Dean Farris (1:51.42) and Ryan Lochte (1:51.68).

Batur Unlu won the final heat with 1:47.92 over Andrew Seliskar (1:48.38) and Patrick Callan (1:48.73).

Caeleb Dressel took the first circle-seeded heat with 1:48.69. Drew Loy edged Zane Grothe, 1:48.98 to 1:49.11, for second in the heat.

Bryce Mefford dropped 1.1 seconds from his seed time to win heat 1 in 1:51.73. Luke Maurer won heat 2 in 1:51.36, just edging Christopher Mykkanen (1:51.41).

Women’s 100 Meter Breaststroke

Molly Hannis dominated heat 1, winning in 1:07.56 over Bethany Galat (1:08.91) and Ema Rajic (1:09.47).

Lydia Jacoby broke 1:07 for the first time to come from behind and edge Annie Lazor (1:07.09) in heat 2 with 1:06.99. That time ranks Jacoby 13th in the world for the season. Emily Escobedo was third in 1:07.49.

Lilly King tied her world-leading time for the year in the final heat, winning with 1:05.32. Kaitlyn Dobler touched second in 1:07.80. Diana Petkova (1:08.06) touched out Micah Sumrall (1:08.18) for third.

Men’s 100 Meter Breaststroke

Daniel Chang opened the men’s breaststroke with 1:04.31 for the heat win. Lyubomir Epitropov had a strong finish in heat 2 to win with 1:00.32 over Michael Houlie (1:00.77) and Reece Whitley (1:01.20).

Nic Fink improved his seed time by .05 to win heat 3 in 59.89 for the only sub-1:00 swim of the day. Michael Andrew touched second in 1:00.36. He was followed by Josh Prenot in 1:01.83.

Andrew Wilson closed it out with a 1:00.51 in the final heat. Kevin Cordes edged Tommy Cope, 1:01.13 to 1:01.15, for second. Dillon Hillis took 1.12 seconds off his seed time to qualify for Wave II with 1:01.53.

Women’s 100 Meter Butterfly

Rhyan White swam a stunning 59.63 to kick off the women’s butterfly heats. She improved her seed time by 3.4 seconds and won the heat by just over 2 seconds, with Meghan Small touching second in 1:01.98. White qualified for Wave I and missed Wave II by a mere 4 hundredths.

Beryl Gastaldello edged Rachel Klinker in the first circle-seeded heat, 59.35 to 59.43. Katie Drabot came in third with 59.87. Katie McLaughlin went 58.83 to win the next heat, about 1.5 seconds off her seed time. Remedy Rule went .5 better than her entry time to finish second with 59.70. Third in the heat was Gigi Johnson with 1:01.32.

In the final heat, Kelsi Dahlia and Natalie Hinds were about even at the halfway mark but Dahlia exploded over the final 25 meters to win with 58.10. Hinds just eked out a second-place finish over Lillie Nordmann, 59.37 to 59.40. Madeline Banic earned a berth at Wave II Trials with 59.46, dropping .49.

Men’s 100 Meter Butterfly

Michael Chadwick won a tight race in heat 1 of the 100 fly, improving his seed time by .7 to stop the clock in 54.33. Drew Loy also dropped a half-second, coming to the wall with 54.50 just ahead of Michael Tenney (54.59).

Andrew Seliskar followed his 200 free performance with a 52.31 win in heat 2 of the fly. Eric Friese improved his seed time by 1.7 seconds to touch out Ryan Murphy, 54.45 to 52.59. Ryan Lochte, who also did a 200 free-100 fly double, went 55.26.

Tom Shields clocked a 52.17 to come from behind and beat Michael Andrew (52.43), who was leading by .4 at the 50 wall. Dylan Carter finished third in heat 3 with 52.95.

Luis Martinez (51.96) won the final heat ahead of Santiago Grassi (52.86), who led at the 50, and Caeleb Dressel (52.60).

In the swim-off for 16th place between Oleksii Khnyki and Dillon Hillis, it was Khnyki who took it out first, turning in 24.6 to Hillis’ 25.3. But Hillis came charging home over the second half of the race and just pushed by Khnyki at the end. Both improved on their earlier swims, with Hillis winning, 53.42 to 53.91. Hillis was .05 shy of his second Wave II qualification time of the evening.

Women’s 400 Meter Individual Medley

With only 13 entrants, everyone who competed in the 400 IM will swim in finals tomorrow morning. Ally McHugh won the first heat in 4:40.25 over Brooke Forde. Leah Smith finished third with 4:45.38.

Haley Anderson took the fly out in heat 2, followed by Hali Flickinger and Isabelle Odgers. Madisyn Cox took over the lead after the backstroke, while Melanie Margalis moved past Odgers into third. Margalis closed a big gap on the breaststroke leg, but didn’t quite catch Flickinger who was in second behind Cox. Over the final 100 meters, Margalis faded while Flickinger revved it up to challenge Cox. Flickinger brought it home in 30.6 over the final 50 meters and got the win in 4:39.13. Cox touched second in 4:40.11. Margalis went 4:44.09 for third.

Men’s 400 Meter Individual Medley

There were some big time drops in the opening heat of men’s 400 IM, as Kyle Brill and Parker Reynolds both crushed their seed times. Brill dropped 11.6 for 4:32.46; Reynolds improved by 13.1 for 4:36.07.

Sean Grieshop led from start to finish in heat 2, getting the win in 4:18.13. Tom Peribono (4:21.95) and Grant Sanders (4:23.86) finished 2-3 behind him.

Charlie Swanson was another wire-to-wire heat winner, taking the final heat in 4:22.64. Jared Arroyo was in second place after the fly and back legs, but Josh Prenot caught him on the breaststroke. Arroyo outsplit Prenot over the final 100 meters, though, and took second in the heat with 4:22.64. Prenot was third in 4:24.92.
