Andrey Zhilkin delivered the swim of his career when it mattered most, qualifying for his first Olympic team in the men’s 200 IM by lowering the Russian National Record in a time of 1:57.50.
Racing head-to-head with Ilya Borodin, the holder of what is now the former record of 1:58.00, Zhilkin dominated from start to finish, opening up over a second lead on Borodin on fly before widening the gap the rest of the way.
Zhilkin’s fly is the main difference-maker compared to Borodin’s previous record swim as well.
