Canadian Backstroker Mikhaela Johnson Commits to Dalhousie University for 2021

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mikhaela Johnson of Ontario, Canada has committed to swim for Dalhousie University beginning in the 2021-2022 season. Dalhouse University competes in the Canadian collegiate USports league.

She will swim for the Canadian university under the direction of Coach Lance Cansdale. Johnson swims club for the Sault Surge Aquatic Team. She trains with head coach Sarah MacDonald.

I’m happy to share that I’ve signed to swim at Dalhousie University starting this fall! Thank you to my family and everyone at Sault Surge, who have become family along the way. Go Tigers!

Johnson began her swimming career in 2015. In 2019, she competed at the Summer Ontario Swimming Championships. She swam the 100m back, the 200m back, and the 100m fly, making it back to finals in the 100m back and 100m fly.

She went from touching 10th in prelims of the 100m fly to touching 7th in finals. She was also a member of Sault Surge’s 400m medley and 400m free relays. She split a 100 fly time of 1:06.22 on the butterfly leg of the medley relay, and a 1:03.86 on the free relay.

Top LCM Times (Converted to SCY):

  • 100 back – 1:08.70 (1:00.81)
  • 200 back – 2:28.88 (2:11.96)
  • 100 fly – 1:06.35 (58.51)
  • 100 free – 1:03.02 (55.33)
  • 200 free – 2:17.12 (2:00.64)
  • 400 free – 4:45.69 (5:20.10)

At the 2019 Summer Ontario Swimming Championship, which was almost 2 years ago now, Johnson finished 7th in the 100 fly. She was seeded 7th going into the 100 back final as well, but was disqualified.

Racing opportunities have been slim for her since – she has only raced officially in three Swimming Canada meets in the last 18 months, one of which was an intrasquad time trial.

Johnson will join the Dalhousie Tigers in the fall of 2021, where she is looking forward to pursuing her interest in Kinesiology.
