14-year-old Richard Poplawski had a dominant week last week at an intrasquad for Scarlet Aquatics’ swimmers in New Jersey.
Poplawski set four new New Jersey LSC records, breaking marks in the 200 back (1:47.78), 200 IM (1:50.43), 400 IM (3:57.14) and 200 fly (1:48.61). Cal freshman Dare Rose held previous records in the 200 fly and 200 IM, Cal commit Jack Alexy the 200 back and Poplawski broke his own mark in the 400 IM.
Poplawski’s biggest drops came in the 200 fly and 200 IM, where he dropped more than three seconds off of his bests coming into the meet.
In addition, Poplawski swam to wins in the 200 free (1:41.85) and 500 free (4:32.81), going lifetime bests in both. He now ranks top 100 in 13-14 age group history in all of the above events except for the 200 free, and in the 200 fly and 200 IM, he cracks the top 10.
Poplawski’s New 13-14 Age Group Top 100 Rankings
- 200 fly – 7th
- 200 IM – 9th
- 200 back – 13th
- 400 IM – 16th
- 500 free – 60th
On the women’s side, 18-year-old Junseo Kim was a force, winning five events.
Kim, a Yale commit, went lifetime bests in the 50 free (23.68), 400 IM (4:16.61), 100 fly (54.91) and 100 free (50.71). She also won the 500 free, going 4:52.70, though that wasn’t a best. Kim took over a second off of her old best in the 100 free and did the same in the 400 IM.
