Sprinter James Shorney Commits to Depauw University (D3)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

James Shorney of River Forest, Illinois, has committed to join Depauw University’s men’s swim team. He swims club for Team Millenium and represents Oak Park-River Forest in high school competition.

I am very excited to announce my commitment to DePauw University to continue my academic and athletic career. I would like to thank my coaches, teammates, and family for helping me along the way. Go Tigers!

Shorney’s best times in the sprint events both come from 2020, with his 100 best coming from pre-quarantine and his 50 best coming from post-quarantine. He represented Team Millennium during both of these swims. In the 50, he dropped a tenth during a time trial in November to go 21.5, which marks his 5th time under 22. In the 100, he dropped a tenth at the Illinois Senior State Championships in March, going sub-48 for just the second time ever to finish at a 47.1.

During the Illinois high school season in spring 2020, Shorney competed at the IHSA State Championships, swimming the 50 and 100 free again. He finished 49th in the 50 (22.3) and 31st in the 100 (48.3). His racing at the IHSA Sectional Championships the weekend prior yielded much more success, as he was a 21.7 in the 50 and a 47.2 in the 100 to place 3rd and 2nd in timed finals.

Top Times SCY:

  • 50 Free- 21.55
  • 100 Free- 47.19
  • 100 Fly- 51.87

Depauw University is an NCAA Division 3 school located in Greencastle, Indiana. They compete in the North Coast Athletic Conference, alongside top D3 teams such as Denison and Kenyon. At the 2020 conference championships, Depauw’s men’s program finished 4th out of 10 teams, just under 40 points behind third-place Wabash.

Shorney is a pure sprinter with instant conference-scoring times in the 50 and 100 free. His lifetime bests place him in the B-final for both events, where he would have finished 14th in both as well.

His times are just off what it took to make Depauw’s 200 and 400 free A relays based on conference relay splits, but he should be a key player for the B relays throughout his freshman year.

Shorney will join Depauw’s class of 2025 alongside Evan Steffy and Brock Kinnamon, who both hail from Indiana.
