Update: Former Connecticut HS Coach Schare Pleads Not Guilty; Facing New Charges

Former Westport, Connecticut Staples High School swim and dive coach and math teacher, Jeffrey Schare, pled not guilty to all eight felony charges brought against him by the Fairfield County Attorney’s office in December 2012.

These charges all relate to sexual abuse of two girls ages 12 and 8 who are acquainted with Schare.  In December, the Fairfield Police stated that Schare confessed to sexually abusing the two young girls for almost 2 years.

According to court records, the original complaints involved cases that happened between October 1 and October 13, 2012, though according to police that was just a part of a much longer string of abuse.

On the day of his arraignment, January 22, Schare was arrested again in violation of the protective and restraining orders in place against him.  The police found him near the girls’ home early that morning.  Schare pled not guilty to those violations as well.  He remains free on $175,000 bond with his pre-trial date set for April 24 this year.

Schare has not been a member of USA Swimming since 2006 according to a spokesperson. Schare does not appear on the USA Swimming list of individuals permanently suspended or ineligible.

Further this guy was a maths teacher not Phys ed. But feel free to show me his quals .I am happy to be corrected.

To Bill. – as equally bad as it makes all… Read more »

He can’t be a swim AND dive coach. From the article the alleged victims are not his students – so it really has nothing to do. With the 2 sports or maths.

That he was a teacher may have led others to believe his trustworthiness around children.

So the headline should be -TEACHER charged.
