SPIRE Lake Erie Silver Dolphins won the 2013 Short Course USA Swimming LSC Gold Championships with an incredible combined team score of 2637.5 points, breaking 9 individual team records, all five men’s relay records, and over 20 district records! This was a dominating performance for SPIRE in club swimming. Highlights included:
- SPIRE Resident National Team swimmer Kaitlyn Johnson’s win in the 100 Yard Freestyle, breaking Olympian Melanie Valerio’s 100 FR team record from 1987 (she also broke her own team record in the 50 Yard Freestyle, and broke the district meet records in the 200 Free and 100 Fly);
- University of Virginia bound senior Austin Quinn’s dominating performance, smashing records in the 500 free, 200 Fly, 200 Back, and 100 Fly;
- UNC bound senior Sarah Koucheki’s record breaking swim in the 200 Yard IM (she also won the 400 IM, 100 Back, and 100 fly);
- St. Bonaventure University bound SPIRE PG, Matt Goettler, with a new team record in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (he also now holds the LESD team record in the 100 Breast), and his 1st place finish and meet record in the 50 Yard Breaststroke;
- Ohio University bound SPIRE PG Hannah Shinn, with her first place finish and lifetime best swim in the 200 BR:
- SPIRE LESD men broke the team, meet and district record in the the 400 Freestyle Relay dating back to 1986. That “unbreakable” record swim from 1986 won the Junior National Championship, included four of the top swimmers in the country, one of which went on to a World Record performance, and ranked among the fastest relay times in the country that year. What’s interesting to note, the record breaking relay included one swimmer each from SPIRE (Alex Rosen), Chagrin Falls (Austin Quinn), St. Ignatius (Nathan Christian), and Hawken (Micah Simpson).

a little late to the discussion — I can’t remember the time of the 1986 record — do you guys know?
(and very nice shout out to our mutual friend, Byron)
