The first match of the 2020 International Swimming League season is in the books and Cali Condors’ Lilly King was all alone at the top of the MVP standings. King earned 87.5 points over the two-day contest, leading second-place Ryan Murphy of LA Current by 13 points. Energy Standard’s Sarah Sjostrom, the MVP for the 2019 season, trailed King by 21 points.
King has never lost a race in ISL. She won all her individual events and all the medley relays she swam last season. And she kicked off 2020 with individual event wins in the 50 breast, 100 breast, and 200 breast. She also snagged another gold in the women’s 400 medley relay. What put her ahead of the prolific Sjostrom, however, were the skins race and the jackpot points King stole from competitors who did not meet the time differential. In 2020, the team that wins the medley relay gets to choose the stroke for the skins contest. CAC chose breaststroke and they shut out the three other teams with two entrants -King and Molly Hannis- in the final. King won all three rounds of the 50 breast skins, and with tons of jackpot points.

In addition to the $20,400 in prize money she earned for her racing, King bagged a $10,000 bonus for her 87.5 MVP points.
Murphy’s results were similar to King’s. He won the 50 back and 100 back, was runner-up in the 200 back, was on the winning medley relay, and won all three rounds of the 50 back skins contest. His performances earned him 74.5 MVP points, corresponding to a $6,000 bonus on top of the $22,000 he took home in race winnings.

I am not happy with the new system. I watch my favourite swimmers irrespective of their team, the 1st day skin winners are among them, I applaud their performances. Yet, IMHO skin was overrated last year and is far overrated this year. In a ‘normal’ race the difference between the dominant winner and an average 5 th place is 5 points. Now, the difference with two swims can be more than 70 ponts. That is too much and is also unfair to non-sprinters who do not even have the chance for skin reward.
This Jackpot system & its implications for incentives, individual performance, team dynamics, coach decision making… is a WHOLE PhD thesis
I just realised that the skins points are halved for MVP. So Lily won 50 points for Cali in the skins . Wow!
I’m still convinced that they should not allow a swimmer to jackpot his/her own teammate, what’s the point of doing that?
The fact that Joe Litchfield after a stellar performance in skins got 5 points and $400 pisses me off. I hate the jackpot times.
Swimming only one round and placing 5th – 4 points.
Swimming all three rounds – 5 points.
Is this a joke? What’s the point of working so hard to get into the final then?
I think the jackpot is too easy to reach. It’s different and fun, but the time margin should be larger so it’s not so dramatic in the team race. It double penalizes the team/swimmer who loses points because of the winner taking the points – this makes the team race not very exciting. The divide simply grows bigger each time. If you want the team race more interesting, you need to lower the amount of the jackpotted points.
I honestly wonder what swimmers who had their points stolen by jackpots think about the jackpots. I know Swimswam doesn’t like them, but I wonder if the swimmers feel like it’s fine, or if they hope it was different in some way, and if so, what they would want the ISL to change about it.
If ENS had swam Pilato in the medley relay they might’ve been able to prevent breast in the skins because Pilato’s flat start time from the individual event would’ve had them win by 0.7s. So CAC aren’t entirely unbeatable in the medley relay.
I think the dors are unbeatable in that relay because of lilly king. Yesterday when ens would’ve “won” if they swam Pilato, King went 1:04.0. King is usually unmotivated for relays, but if Pilato was swimming next to her, or if she has any competition whatsoever, she would’ve went 1:03 low, if not 1:02 (she flat started a 1:03 low today).
Think Lily swam 1.03.1 flat start on Sunday so should could easily gone 1 second faster on the relay.
