BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – St. Francis College Brooklyn mourns the loss of Gerard Gannon ’60. Gannon was a men’s water polo student-athlete at St. Francis from 1956-60 and was enshrined into the Terriers’ Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989.
Gannon had a decorated career in the pool for the Terriers and he served as the men’s water polo team’s Co-Captain in 1959 and 1960. He was named the Terrier Most Valuable Player following the 1958 and 1959 seasons and was also awarded The Coaches Cup. Additionally, Gannon was selected to play in the 1957, 1958, and 1959 Eastern All-Star Game.
During his four seasons, he played every position in the pool except for goalie. On March 5, 1958, he scored six goals against City Tech in Bedford, MA, and scored three goals against Brooklyn Poly Tech on April 12, 1958. Gannon led the Terriers to the New York City Championship by defeating Columbia University on April 16, 1958.
He was the recipient of the Franciscan Spirit Award and was written up in the 1959-60 Who’s Who in America. Following his graduation from St. Francis, he continued to play for the New York Athletic Club. He participated in two Olympic and one Pan American games trials. He was a member of the 1963 AAU National Championship team.
Gannon earned his Master’s degree in social work from Fordham University. He was an adjunct professor at St. Joseph’s College and the College of Staten Island. He was a field instructor in the graduate program in social services at Fordham, Columbia University, New York University, and Adelphi University.
Gannon previously served as the Vice President of the St. Francis College Alumni Board. In 2014, he was inducted into St. Augustine’s High School Hall of Fame.
