NC State Pauses All Athletics, Clears Out Dorms After COVID-19 Clusters

NC State has paused all athletic activities after a spike in COVID-19 cases, and the school is asking students to move out of on-campus housing.

Chancellor Randy Woodson announced a reduction in campus housing today. Woodson says the school was hopeful it could keep residence halls open, but a spike in new coronavirus cases “made our current situation untenable.”

Last week, NC State transitioned its remaining in-person and hybrid classes to fully-online models after coronavirus cases increased. Woodson referenced reports of large off-campus parties associated with COVID-19 clusters that affected at least seven Greek houses (fraternities and sororities), among other students.

Now, NC State has instructed all students living on-campus to schedule a move-out date before September 6. The announcement references potential exceptions that students could be granted, but it’s unclear what the reducing of dorm housing will mean for student-athletes living on campus.

In the short term, though, student-athletes will also be affected by a pause in all athletics-related activities. ESPN reports that the school identified 27 positive COVID cases within the athletic department. The school’s announcement doesn’t give any specific timeline for how long the pause will remain in effect, only noting that the school will work with “all appropriate parties to evaluate the most responsible path moving forward and will provide further details when available.”

NC State is the latest in a growing list of schools to adjust academic or athletic plans this fall based on the coronavirus pandemic. A few of the more recent announcements:

Live FREE or die

Freedom comes with significant responsibilities. If you want to use trite comments, how about ‘Freedom isn’t free.’ While that is bandied about for our military it applies to all of us as well. Freedom is a shared outcome that can’t be enjoyed purely individually when it brings negative outcomes on many in society. Just think about everyone around you and we could beat this quickly. Keep putting individual ‘liberty’ above Our collective freedom and we’re stuck in this stupid purgatory.

I absolutely agree with some of your sentiments. “Freedom is never free”. Live free or die is not a trite comment. It is an official motto of one NE State and was the battle cry of many indigenous groups for centuries.

Yeah! Screw any automobile laws too! While we’re at it, let’s let felons, minors, and underage kids buy AR-15s! Laws are an inherent restriction on my freedom! ANARCHY!!!!

Re: Automobile laws I assume you NEVER break the law by exceeding speed limits?? No way let minors or felons purchase AR-15 weapon. I, in fact own an AR-15, as is my constitutional right.

What if?

What if in 6 months, 1 year this thing doesn’t go away, or there is no vaccine found, or it’s only partially effective….then what? Do we continue to isolate ourselves, these kids? When does it end?

Asking for a friend.

School sending students home meaning all these who may be infected are traveling. Why not just quarantine in their dorms and go online for a while???

In March all the college kids were sent back and traveled home. Could this be one of the virus spreading reasons at that time?

Yes. Either you might have had it at school and brought it home and spread it or were safe at school and potentially exposing yourself by going home.

How exactly do you quarantine in dorms? Let alone the difficulty with enforcing it among a bunch of 18-22 year olds, you’ve got things like food and mail (food to eat and mail to get the other things they might need) which are generally housed in different buildings than the dorms.

LISTEN: Every school is living in fear. Yes it will spread! Let it! Top virologists in Texas and DC say the virus has weakened. Testing kits are not valid to the point they are registering a simple cold virus.
Stop freaking out about every case that is registered as “Covid”. Our immune systems are weakening by the week with all the isolation. No matter when students go back… they will get sick! Maybe not with Covid…. but they get sick with colds, the flu, mono, etc.
Why didn’t we shut down college campuses when the Norovirus hit? Why didn’t we shut down campuses when H1N1 hit?
Fine you don’t want to go back? Don’t. I can respect… Read more »

hahahaha… If you just signed up as Dr. J I would count this post as a missed layup. But, doctor you are not. Anyway, did you notice information above that 45 faculty got infected. I don’t know if that is true or not but we would/will end up with many staff and faculty sick and some dead. How many dead faculty is a tolerable number for you, to enjoy football or swimming? If one of them is your wife or husband and they die, would you still think it was worth it? Don’t be stupid.

So you KNOW FOR A FACT that “some” of the 45 faculty will die from Covid-19? Is that scare speculation on your part or are you a Medical Actuary?

46 employees now tested positive, since March. That’s one more than yesterday.
.5% of staff positive. Frightening stuff indeed.

At this point I think every school should just go virtual. We can’t trust these kids to be serious about safety measures.

It’s ridiculous to expect anything else. They know they are not likely to have any serious issues from this virus. And they are living their life or trying to. If we had let them do this in March we’d be past it by now.

Ok sure, but you were a troll on this site for years before the COVID-era, by any definition of the word. It’s pretty clear that you quite relish that roll, in fact.
