Wisconsinite Cassie Stegner Commits to University of Houston, Class of 2024

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Cassie Stegner of Menomonee Falls, WI, has committed to swim at Division I school the University of Houston this fall, joining the Cougars’ class of 2024.

Of her commitment, Stegner says:

Pumped to join the Cougar family! I believe the University of Houston will push me to accomplish my academic and athletic goals. I look forward to joining this great group of girls and coaching staff in the fall of 2020. GO COOGS!!

Stegner is a member of the class of 2020 at Menomonee Falls High School, where she has swam for the past four years. This past November, she competed at the 2019 WIAA Division 1 State Championship, placing second in both the 100 free and the 200 free with times of 50.97 and 1:49.58, respectively. Stegner also swam for Rocket Aquatics, with whom she raced at the Speedo Winter Junior Championship West in December, 2019. She finished the meet with lifetime bests in both the 50 free (23.63) and the 200 IM (2:04.35). More recently, Stegner swam at one of the last USA Swimming-sponsored meets before the organization suspended competition for health and safety concerns. In early March, she swam at the Wisconsin 13 and Over SCY State Championship, earning lifetime bests in the 100 back (56.74, placing 6th) and the 100 IM (57.40, placing 3rd).

When Stegner joins the Cougars this fall, she will be seated as fourth-fastest in the 50 free, following the graduation of current seniors Hanna Blewett and Zarena Brown. Additionally, she will be third-fastest in the 100 free and fourth-fastest in the 200 free. If Stegner had been a part of the 2019-2020 squad and competed at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships, she would have A-finaled in the 200 free and B-finaled in the 100.

Top SCY times:

  • 50 free – 23.63
  • 100 free – 50.84
  • 200 free – 1:49.21
  • 100 back – 56.74
  • 200 IM – 2:04.35

The University of Houston is coming off one of the best performances for the swimming program in 30 years. Besides winning a 4th-straight AAC conference title, the school had 5 individual swimmers invited to the NCAA Championship meet (which was ultimately cancelled due to the global coronavirus pandemic). That tied powerhouse program the University of Texas for the 2nd-most among Texas schools (behind Texas A&M’s 10).
