World Juniors Medalist Murilo Sartori Commits to Louisville for Fall of 2021

For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

2019 FINA World Junior Championships 200 free bronze medalist Murilo Sartori of Brazil has verbally committed to the University of Louisville for the fall of 2021, he announced on Instagram on Sunday.

Sartori is 17 years old, and will be 19 when he arrives at Louisville.

I am excited to announce I plan to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Louisville in the fall of 2021. I want to thank my club coach, family, and friends who have supported me so far. My journey continues with the ultimate goal of earning a spot for Tokyo 2021! GO CARDS!

Sartori is primarily a freestyler, with the 200m freestyle probably being his best event. He won bronze at last summer’s World Junior Championships with a time of 1:47.39, and has best times of 49.78 and 3:49.77 in the LCM versions of the 100 and 400 freestyles as well.

While conversions are an imprecise calculation, here’s how those times convert to SCY on our convertor:

  • 100 free: 49.78 – 43.40
  • 200 free: 1:47.39 – 1:33.86
  • 400 free: 3:49.77 – 4:17.44 (500 yard free)

For another comparison, his best long course time in the 200 free of 1:47.39 is very similar to the best time of Carson Foster (1:47.47). Foster is the National High School Record holder in the 200 yard free.

Longtime Louisville head coach Arthur Albiero is a Brazilian native, and the Cardinals have had a good deal of success with international swimmers over the years, including NCAA champions Carlos Almeida and Joao de Lucca, among many others. Both Almeida (Portugal) and de Lucca (Brazil) come from Portuguese-speaking nations.

Cardinal men won the 200 free at the ACC Championships the last two years, suggesting that Sartori should fit right into the Cardinals crew. Assuming he adapts to racing in short course yards, Sartori should make an immediate scoring impact at the ACC level and should qualify for NCAAs in the 200 free as well. This year’s ACC 200 free champion, Colton Paulson, will be a junior during the 2021-2022 school year, and last year’s champion Bartosz Piszczorowicz, should also still be on the Cardinal’s roster, after taking a redshirt this year to prepare for the Olympics in his native Poland.

1.47.3 is surely worth a lot more than 1.33.8? I’d have guessed sub 1.32.

Colton Paulson, not Tanner Cummings, won ACCs in the 200 free.

Robert your data is wrong,
Murilo has 49.78 as PB in 100free(Maria Lenk 2019)
and 3:49.77 in 400free (Brazilian Junior Champs 2019)
