Michael Andrew Says 59.8 was Easiest 100 Breast of His Life (Video)

2020 PRO SWIM SERIES – DES MOINES

Reported by James Sutherland.

MEN’S 100 BREAST FINAL

  • PSS Record: 58.86, Adam Peaty (GBR), 2017
  1. Michael Andrew, RPC, 59.14
  2. Kevin Cordes, ABSC, 1:00.45
  3. Nic Fink, ABSC, 1:00.52

After a quick 59.83 in the prelims, Michael Andrew had a sensational performance in tonight’s men’s 100 breast final, setting a new personal best time in 59.14. Andrew’s previous best was 59.38 set in the summer of 2018 at US Nationals, and the fastest he’d ever been at a PSS meet was 59.52 last year.

The 20-year-old opened up a big lead in the heat with a 27.48 opening 50, and then came home four-tenths better than this morning in 31.66. He moves into sixth in the world this season and is now the top American while maintaining his spot at #7 among US swimmers all-time.

It was a close race for second between Athens Bulldogs teammates Kevin CordesNic Fink and Andrew Wilson. In the end it was Cordes, using a 32.00 back half, who got his hands on the wall in 1:00.45, with Fink (1:00.52) and Wilson (1:00.64) just behind. The time for Cordes is just off of what he went at the Pan Am Games last summer and the US Open in December, which is a positive sign heading into the summer.

That’s so classic breaststroke.

I used to hate it so much.

I had never been under 2.30 in my 200 Brst. Get up for a heat at states. Get so far ahead of the field by the 150 i completely coast home the last 50, bang 2:21.2

Alright, final time, now I’ll really smash myself and get after it in this final. Absolutely work myself to death, just barely hold it together for the last 50. Finish. Am ready to see my 2:19. 2:21.5… fuuuuuuuuu…

Non taper meet. 100 brst. Just going to practice my race plan no problem. Been a hard period of work. Nice swim, 1:05.3. Feeling pretty good about nationals in a month now.

Go to nationals.… Read more »

Oh yes, because a somewhat amusing anecdote about solid enough, but unspectacular age group swimming means I’m arrogant.

Unless your point was that a comment a few 100 words long was too long? In which case that certainly says more about you than me.

He looked SO comfortable until the miscue at the end. Just waited too long to make tempo adjustments to hit the wall in stride. With a good finish, that’s easily under 59. Fastest out. Fastest back. Totally dominated that field.

While I’m not a fan of vlogging or selling yourself as a brand I am a big fan of MA in the water; he is a talented swimmer. I think he and Andrew Wilson will be the top 2 Americans this summer.

Agreed – those 2 look like the best candidates so far

his last strokes were cut short with no necessity he was flowing perfectly in sync , it even looked like a 85% effort compared to lane 6, his kick is way more propulsive than the rest , kevin cordes looked awful his early speed is lost , cody miller also looked bad they all were spinning wheels compared to MA , I’m a big fan of MA I’d love to see him in tokyo

Safe to assume that those other guys are way more physically beat up from training than MA is. Not sure how this event will shake out at Trials, but I’m sure they will both look much better than this.

Probably his best chance to make the Olympic team is in the 100 br.

Unimpressed. He has been a 59 since 2016. I think he will need to be a 58.5 in Omaha to make it

59.8 vs 59.1 is a huge drop at this level. We are spoiled by phenoms like Peaty and Dressel who take huge chunks of time off world records but nearly a second improvement in a 100 with how good he already was is huge. Lots of pro swimmers train years to take 0.01 off their best swims

We get it, you don’t like MA. Maybe refocus your life in a new direction instead of tearing into MA on ***multiple*** story threads.

Seems a bit of an aggressive prediction to me. I doubt 58.6 will only get you 3rd at Trials this summer, that’s the current American record.

He’s breaststroke cadence is better and looks faster.

I still remember 2-3 years ago when MA and Reece Whitley were battling it out in yards. Now MA has somewhat proved himself. Hopefully Reece and pull something out this summer, like a breakout swim in the 200 breast at Omaha

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
