The Mercer Island boys raced to a team title at the 2020 Washington 3A State Championships. They took the title by 23.5 points over 2019 champion Bainbridge Island. Collin Ralston contributed a state title in their win. Ralston won the 100 breast in 55.70. He also put up a 25.25 breast split on the 200 medley relay and a 21.52 3rd leg split on the 200 free relay.
Bainbridge Island’s Jude Wenker set a Meet Record in the 200 free. He took over a second off his best in 1:38.11. That broke the former mark set by East Catholic’s Ethan Hollowell in 2011. Wenker went on to win the 100 free in 44.99, his first swim under 45.
Wenker was the anchor man on the 200 free relay, posting a 20.35 split. He was joined by Tyler Stewart (leadoff- 22.10), Harrison Villella (21.99), and Andrew Witty (20.48) as they won the race in 1:24.92. Wenker also put up a 44.38 anchor on Bainbridge’s 400 free relay.
Gig Harbor sophomore Billy Oates also won a pair of events. Oates first put up a personal best 20.53 to win the 50 free. In the 100 back, he dropped over a second to break 50 for the first time in 49.10. Oates had split a 23.08 on the back leg of the 200 medley relay in prelims, but Gig Harbor was ultimately disqualified there. He led off the 200 free relay in 21.02.
