2020 Women’s B1G Championships: Day 2 Prelims Live Recap

2020 WOMEN’S B1G CHAMPIONSHIPS

The first prelims session of the 2020 B1G Championships is underway this morning, featuring the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free. After an exciting night of relays, let’s get into some individual racing. Kathrin Demler is the top seed in the 500 free, coming in with a season best of 4:37.22. Michigan’s distance duo of Sierra Schmidt and Kaitlynn Sims sit just behind Demler heading into today. Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson is the top seed in the 200 IM by over 4 seconds. Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil is the top seed by a signifcant margin in the 50 free, coming in at 21.60. However, Ohio State’s Freya Rayner split an incredible 21.05 on the medley relay last night, and if she can recapture that magic from a flat start, Rayner could give Macneil a run for her money.

Molly Kowal of Ohio State swam a nearly identical race to Sims, coming in just .13 seconds behind, and IU’s Cassy Jernberg also swam a very similar race for 3rd. Takeaways:
1) Beata Nelson looks primed to break her own meet record
2) Maggie MacNeil looks unstoppable in more than just her bread and butter event
3) B1G women are certainly less deep than their SEC and ACC counterparts so far

Nice swims by Haebig and Phillip to get Nebraska and Rutgers into the A finals.

Let’s do this SAT style. Is the answer (a) not recruiting enough talent, (b) not developing the talent they get, (c) both a and b, or (d) something else.

Unfortunately, it may be all of the above. Doesn’t look like it will get any better for next year, either. I hope that they can turn it around. They did get some swimmers in the B and C finals so at least they will score a few points

Looks like Gresser from OSU split a 32.41 on the breaststroke leg … that’s fast!
