WATCH: Kieran Smith’s 1:30.1 200 Free, Day 1 SEC Race Videos

2020 SEC SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Swimmers competed in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay tonight to kick off the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships. There were several notable swims on night 1, including the 4th fastest swim ever in the 200 freestyle. Florida’s Kieran Smith led off the 800 free relay in 1:30.11, a best by 4 seconds. Smith, Gerry Quinn, Khader Baqlah, and Clark Beach took down the SEC Meet Record.

Alabama’s Zane Waddell swam the 3rd fastest 50 back in history, a 20.33, to lead off the 200 medley relay. Texas A&M came from behind to win that race in school record time. Check out the men’s race videos below, courtesy of TAMU Swim on YouTube.

The women’s videos will be posted as they become available. Tennessee’s Erika Brown tied the 4th fastest relay split in history as she anchored for the Volunteers in 20.57. Brown also swam a field-best 1:41.08 on the 2nd leg of Tennessee’s winning 800 free relay.

My club team once had a swimmer nearly break 1:30 in a 200 free while wearing fins, but he fell a second short so I kicked him off the team. No losers on my team!

This isn’t a diss in anyway shape or form but to watch the 1:30.1 and know the record is a second faster reminds me of when Koski went 1:31.8 only to be defeated by Haas at ATL NCAAS.
Crazy to think that was 4 years ago, Nothing like Olympic year NCAAs

If you watch the Bama anchor closely, you can see his feet go into the gutter when he tries to push off on the turn

A little bit tougher for the foreigners like him that didn’t grow up with it too

Technically the low gutters actually make pools faster because they cut down on the number of waves that are reflected back into the pool.

I’ve always wondered how the olympic type pools are so fast with the waves coming back and hitting the swimmers because the touch pads are right there… maybe someone can enlighten me

To anyone who watches Caeleb Dressel’s podcast, in episode 8 around the 14:20 min mark, when ben describes his story about his 50 free, that was what I thought about watching bamas last leg.

Great technique on his flip turns. Love seeing the explosion into the wall right before flipping, getting upper body underwater earlier in the turn and using that final stroke as part of the flip. Consistency on dolphin kick/breakouts as well.

Nicely executed.

We used to call it the submarine flipturn and I noticed that as well… he gets into his turn phenomenally on every wall and you can tell it makes a huge difference
