PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Marshall Thundering Herd swimming and diving team opened 2020 at Duquesne as it fell in a close matchup, 210-198.
“Before we competed today, we talked to the team about staying present and executing their swims and dives. Our women did an excellent job of moving through each event and competing today. The format of the meet was challenging, especially for our swimmers, as we only had 12 athletes due to some injuries and illnesses,” Marshall head coach Ian Walsh said after the meet.
The Herd picked up individual wins in the 50-Yard Fly by Hannah Robins, the 100-Yard Free and 50-Yard Free by Darby Coles, the 100-Yard Back by Jordyn O’Dell, in the 200-Yard Back by Heather Sigmon, Robins won again in the 100-Yard Fly and 100-Yard Individual Medley and Madison Young in the three-meter dive.
“There were some individual performances that really stood out today,” Walsh commented. “Hannah (Robins) won her first individual event of her career in the 50 Butterfly and then followed that up with her second win in the 100 Butterfly. Darby (Coles) was also a two event winner (50 Free & 100 Free). Jordyn O’Dell got her hand to the wall in a very tight race in the 100 Back and Heather Sigmon had a breakthrough meet making some technical changes that really showed in her 200 Backstroke with an in-season best.”
MU’s 200-Yard Free Relay team of Coles, Robins, O’Dell and Megan Raines took the event as did the team of Coles, Robins, O’Dell and Alexis Wilhoit in the 400-Yard Free Relay.
“Our divers did a nice job today as many performances were right up against their season bests,” Walsh said. “Madison and Lauren placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively on the 1m and 3m boards. Our divers will have a productive weekend coming up as they travel to work on their platform lists as we get closer to our conference championships.”
The Herd will be back in action next Saturday when it travels to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt.
“We’re looking forward to getting back into our regular routine with school and practice this week. We should be back to full strength in the coming weeks as we head to Nashville, TN to take on a strong Vanderbilt University program,” Walsh said.
