U.S. National teamer Erica Sullivan made a statement on the final day of the 2019 KMSC Pro-Am. Sullivan swam her only individual event, the 1650 free, on Sunday. She dropped nearly 13 seconds in the event, posting a 15:23.81.
That makes her the 2nd fastest performer in history in the event. She sits behind only distance legend Katie Ledecky, an Olympic gold medalist and NCAA Champion. Ledecky owns the American and U.S. Open Record with a 15:03.31 from the Art Adamson Invite in 2017.

Sullivan’s swim was the 7th fastest performance in history. She committed to swim for the USC Trojans, but decided to defer until after the 2020 Olympics. Sullivan is currently training with her club coach, Ron Aitken, for the Sandpipers of Nevada.
I was THRILLED that she chose to stay and train with Ron and deferred going to USC until fall 2020.
Every coach should take to heart what Ron is doing at Sandpiper – he picked his philosophy and that is the direction of the program, and he doesn’t waver from it!
Proud of what you’re accomplishing my friend!
Something in the water at Sandpipers.

Great job by the coaches.
Whoah, that’s fast
18 and beat the time Leah Smith did at NCAA’s. Wow!

Has Sandpiper always been a “distance” program (producing their best swimmers in distance races)? If so, then that’s pretty amazing that they also produced an Olympic breaststroker in Cody Miller!
Sandpiper (Ron Aitken) develops anyone that joins the Team and believes they can be great. This surpasses the old mens distance club that just beats em and rests em. Coach Ron goes to work for everyone on his Team.

She’s in the mix for the second spot in the 1500 free. It might be better if someone like Sullivan or Twitchell get it rather than Leah Smith, who will likely make it in other events.
Leah probably won’t swim it IMO
Smith has only raced three 1500 frees since 2014. I don’t think she’s pursuing that for Tokyo.
