Brookfield East broke the state medley relay record and won the final two individual events to cap a 23-point win in Wisconsin’s Division I girls high school swimming championship.
The team of sophomore Abby Wanezek, freshman Lucy Thomas, junior Reilly Tiltmann and sophomore Callie Gregg went 1:42.54 to break that 200 medley relay mark. Wanezek (24.95 backstroke) had the field’s best leadoff split by more than a full second, staking the team to a big lead. Thomas had the field’s best breaststroke split (28.53) and Tiltmann the best fly leg (24.41) as Gregg anchored in 24.65. The old record was a 1:42.71 from way back in 2005.
Tiltmann and Thomas would go on to win individual events late in the meet. Tiltmann went 52.88 to win the 100 back by 1.6 seconds. She was only seven tenths off a state record held by now-NCAA standout Beata Nelson (52.13 from 2015). That was a 1-2 finish for Brookfield East, with Wanezek second in 54.46.
Then the 9th-grader Thomas won the 100 breast in 1:02.33, besting the field by just over a second. She’s within two seconds of a Grace Bennin state record with three more high school seasons to come.
Wanezek was also second in the 50 free for Brookfield East.
Bay Port senior Emma Lasecki won a pair of events. She was 2:00.66 to win the 200 IM by more than two seconds, and bested Tiltmann in a touchout of the 100 fly, 54.21 to 54.28.
Sun Prairie junior Sophie Fiske also won twice. She beat Wanezek in the 50 free, 22.93 to 23.11, and returned to win the 100 free in 49.82. Fiske also split 22.43 on the end of the 200 free relay, erasing a half-second lead to give Sun Prairie a dominating 1:35.20 win. Her 49.11 anchor also ran down Brookfield East for the 400 free relay title in 3:25.86.
Other event winners:
- Wakesha South/Mukwonago took the 200 free, with junior Abby Carlson going 1:49.21 to win a tight race where three swimmers broke 1:50.
- Neenah senior Av Osero won diving, scoring 498.15.
- Arrowhead junior Sydney Stoll won the 500 free in 4:54.85. That was another touchout, with Carlson going 4:54.90 for second.
