Energy Standard’s Daiya Seto took down Ryan Lochte‘s nine-year-old world record in the short course meters 400 IM Friday at the 2019 ISL Grand Finale in Las Vegas, his ISL debut.

The Japanese Seto, 25, went 3:54.81 (52.35/59.05/1:06.60/56.91). Lochte’s previous record of 3:55.50 was done on December 16, 2010. The previous US Open record was 3:59.52.

Seto got out to a commanding lead early on and never looked back. London Roar’s Duncan Scott finished second in 3:59.81 and was the only other swimmer to break four minutes. Seto’s teammate Max Litchfield was third in 4:01.31.

Seto, a four-time world champion, signed with Energy Standard in late September, but had yet to race in the league. He was the second Asian swimmer to join the ISL behind Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey, who is based in the U.S.  He is the current world record holder in the SCM 200 fly, and has accumulated 12 SCM World Championships medals dating back to 2012. Seto is the reigning SCM world champion in the 200 fly and 400 IM.

What else did he do? Seems breaking a WR at ISL is the best possible promotion.

Amazing swim. One of my favourite events to watch and beating a Lochte record is special. Maybe he can break Phelps LC record next year 😉
