The Michael Phelps Effect On Kids In The Social Media Age

Over the weekend, SwimSwam posted a Michael Phelps archive video, footage of him as an eleven year old. His stroke was there, nearly 100%; the near perfect body position, his wide entry on butterfly. He looked like a mini version of the Olympic icon we all know and respect.

He’s gone, retired from competition, but his legacy will live on in the next generation, many of which are already posting their videos.

This one we found especially cute. It’s been around for a few years, but I always come back to it. I remember doing this myself, pretending to be Mark Spitz. The kid’s playful imagination may seem like just that, play, but it is the begining of an Olympic dream millions of kids around the world will shape, mold, and one may usher into fruition.

Michael Phelps’ famous Speedo video commercial from 2005, so simple, just him rotating as his accolades scroll onscreen like a computer printout, has been copied several times by swimming kids. Here’s the latest from Makayla, an eleven year USA Swimming club swimmer.
