Fresh off his U.S. Open Meet record in heats, Andrew Wilson charged to the early lead in the 100 breast final. He turned at 27.96, just a tick ahead of Dmitriy Balandin (28.0). The second half belonged to Balandin, though, as the Olympic Champion in the 200 breast came home in 31.35 to Wilson’s 31.58 for the victory. Balandin missed the meet record by .08 with his final time of 59.36. Wilson was runner-up in 59.54. Cody Miller took third in 59.92. No one else broke a minute in the heat, although fourth-place Nic Fink went 1:00.05.
Her reaction to getting the goggles is adorable. I think we SwimSwam commenters sometimes forget that we’re commenting about world class athletes who are hugely inspiring to swimmers who will never sniff a national cut and are thrilled to qualify for their state meet. We often focus on international swimming, which is appropriate. But we’re so engrossed in the elite. It’s nice to be reminded about the roots that support our sport.
He’s probably making more money doing this than swimming. He found a niche and capitalized on it. Good for him.
