US National Team swimmer Hannah Moore has scratched out of the women’s 800 free timed finals on Wednesday, day 1 of the 2019 U.S. Open Swimming Championships. Moore entered the meet seeded as the 12th seed, and still has entries in the 400 and 1500 freestyles later in the meet.
Moore also scratched the 800 free at the Greensboro Pro Swim Series meet in early November, in spite of placing 2nd in the 1500 free earlier in the meet. Moore seems to be all-in on the 1500 free, the newest Olympic event for women, as the Olympic Trials approach. For comparison, since January 1, 2018, Moore has raced the 1500 free 8 times, and the 800 free just 3 times. That 1500 is probably Moore’s best bet for Tokyo after being disqualified in the 10km race at Open Water Nationals last year and missing an entry in that event for the World Championships, though she did earn a bronze medal in the 5km race – which is a non-Olympic event.
The only other top-20 seed to have scratched the women’s 800 is University of Hawaii senior Phoebe Hines. A native of Australia, Hines had a breakout season last year when she placed 5th in the 1650 free at the NCAA Championships.
The big highlight of the session will be the World Record holder in the 800 free Katie Ledecky racing alongside her top domestic distance rival Leah Smith.
There were no scratches in the top 20 seeds in the men’s race.
Hannah was DQ’d in the 10K at this year’s OW nationals, which was the selection event for Worlds. That would have been her opportunity to qualify for the Olympics in OW. She was 6th in 2018. Best of luck to her in her quest to make it in the pool.
