Though Minnetonka won all three relays and five events overall, conference rivals Edina won their fourth-straight Minnesota high school state title in Class AA.
A 14th 0verall state title ties Edina with Virginia for the Minnesota state record. Edina won two events on the way there. Junior Claudia Chang went 4:54.33 to win the 500 freestyle in a 1-2 finish with teammate Katie McCarthy. That’s only about a tenth off of a career-best for Chang, who also won the event as a sophomore in 2018.
Meanwhile Megan Philip won her fourth-straight state diving title with 493.55 points. Philip is a senior this season.
Minnetonka won all three relays, and junior Abby Kapeller went 4-for-4 in state titles. Kapeller took home the 50 free in 22.60 and the 100 back in 53.72. Both were narrow lifetime-bests. Kapeller has recently verbally committed to Virginia for the 2021 season and beyond, following former Minnetonka standout Sam Schilling.
Kapeller also helped Minnetonka win the 200 medley relay (she split 25.1 on backstroke en route to a 1:43.27 win) and 400 free relay (a 49.6 anchor for a 3:25.09 final time). Minnetonka also eked out a win over Edina 1:34.44-to-1:34.67 in the 200 free relay.
Other two-event winners were Robbinsdale Armstrong’s Sierra Smith and Anoka’s Reese Dehen. Smith, a senior, upset defending champ Chang in the 200 free, 1:48.28 to 1:49.53. Smith also went 50.29 to win the 100 free. She’s verbally committed to swim for Missouri next season. Dehen defended her state title in the 200 IM, going 2:01.16. The junior won by almost three seconds, and went on to take the 100 breast in 1:02.07.
Wayzata freshman Claire Reinke won the 100 fly in 54.79.
