Janelle Rudolph Unleashes 47.7 Relay Split as Bellevue Wins Washington 3A Title

Bellevue senior Janelle Rudolph stole the show over the weekend at the Washington 3A State Championships, winning the 50 free and 100 free and dropping huge relay splits to propel Bellevue to a team title.

Rudolph’s biggest performance came in the 400 free relay, where she dove in as Bellevue’s anchor leg in third place, over two seconds behind leader Lake Washington. The Stanford commit nearly made up the gap on the first 50, flipping at 22.82 to the feet, before steamrolling her way down the back-half to split a 47.77 and close out the meet with another Bellevue win.

Individually, Rudolph posted wins in the 50 free (22.37/22.36 in prelims) and 100 back (52.90), while anchoring Bellevue’s winning 200 medley relay with a 22.22 split. She destroyed her own 50 free 3A meet record (22.85), as well as Leona Jennings’ 2008 100 back meet record (53.66), while Bellevue’s 200 medley relay also set a new 3A mark. Rudolph’s times in the 50 free and 100 back also set overall Washington high school records.

Lake Washington grabbed the second place trophy, finishing as runners-up in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay as well as fourth in the 200 free relay. Depth was the name of their game; they had at least one swimmer in every individual event make the A-final, while Amelia Hammer was the lone winner with a victory in the 100 free (50.93). The junior added a runner-up finish in the 50 free (23.39) behind Rudolph, while sophomore Courtney Cross posted third-place efforts in the 200 free (1:51.82) and the 500 free (5:02.01).

OTHER WINNERS

• Lakeside, finishing fifth overall, was led by double winner Nathalie Valdman, who was 1:48.92 in the 200 free and 4:52.80 in the 500 free, winning by significant margins in both races.
• Bainbridge, the third-place finishers, took the 200 free relay (1:37.08) with a 23.40 anchor from sophomore Margaret Hayes. Hayes would grab the win in the 200 IM, clocking a 2:03.61.
• Roosevelt’s Kate Leary won the 100 fly with a 55.02.
• Para swimmer and Stadium junior Madilyn Murphey notched wins in the 50 free (33.26) and 50 back (40.16).
• The 1-meter diving event went to Snohomish junior Kayli Kersavage (438.80).
• Jetlynn Hau, a senior at Stanwood, clocked a huge lifetime best of 1:02.04 to win the 100 breast. She was a couple of tenths off of Kim Williams’ 3A record.
