The Caeleb DresselKyle Chalmers rivalry continues, as Dressel today broke Chalmers’ U.S. Open 100 free record by a single hundredth of a second.

Chalmers set the short course meters record in the International Swimming League’s Lewisville meet, going 46.22. The previous U.S. Open record (the fastest swim ever done on American soil by an athlete of any nationality) was a 46.25 from Ian Crocker back in 2004.

But Dressel led off the Cali Condors men’s 4×100 free relay tonight, going 46.21 to slide under Chalmers’ record. Dressel was originally set to anchor the relay, but Cali changed their lineup late to move Dressel into the leadoff leg. He hit that U.S. Open record and staked Cali to a big lead, as his relay ultimately won the event in 3:08.52.

Dressel holds the American record at 45.62 – he set that time at Short Course Worlds last December. He was 45.77 in his first ISL appearance in Naples. That event comes early in the session tomorrow, so Dressel should have a real shot to lower his U.S. Open record and perhaps his American record in the individual race Sunday. Dressel was in his fourth swim of the two-hour session tonight, with his relay leadoff coming after wins in the 100 fly and 50 free, plus a fly leg on a 4×100 medley relay.

naaah. Dressel wasn’t really at his best at the last SC Worlds, I bet he can beat that when everything clicks. Both Morozov and even Manaudou have been faster than that time and I would argue Dressel is better than them.
