Turkish Teen Böcekler Sets 1500 Free SCM National Record

2019 DANISH OPEN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

While competing on day 2 of the 2019 Danish Open Short Course Championships, 15-year-old Turkish swimmer Beril Böcekler busted out a new national record in the women’s short course meters 1500 freestyle.

Entering this 3-day meet, Böcekler’s personal best in this grueling event rested at the 16:27.52 she produced at the Turkish Championships in December of 2018. Flash forward to tonight, however, and the teenager crushed that mark, stopping the clock in a time of 16:06.76. That beat the Danish field by almost 25 seconds this evening.

Böcekler has been on a tear this year, making a name for herself in every competition in which she dives in the pool. At the 2019 European Junior Championships, the Turkish teen notched 3 new national standards, producing long course times of 4:10.41 in the 400m free, 8:34.56 in the 800m free and 16:21.39 in the 1500m free. She collected silver in the latter 2 races.

Moving on to the European Youth Olympic Festival, Böcekler topped the podium an impressive 3 times, reaping gold across the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle races. She raced her way to times of 2:00.62, 4:09.71 and 8:32.65, respectively, setting EYOF meet records in the latter 2 events.

Yesterday here in Esbjerg, Böcekler came within a second of her own 4:08.51 national record with a morning swim of 4:09.79 in the heats of the women’s 400m free.
