Maggie Purcell Wins Three Events to Pace Richmond in Win over Duquesne

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond swimming and diving got the 2019-20 season started with a big win Friday night during the Richmond Duals. The Spiders, winners of 15 of the last 18 Atlantic 10 Championships, defeated the reigning A-10 Champions, Duquesne, 174-105.

Richmond took first in 11 of the 16 events, including three wins from sophomore Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.). Senior Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y.) took home the win in the 1-meter event and finished second on the 3-meter diving competition.

Richmond got its first first-place finish of the night in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) won the race, swimming in 55.84, followed quickly by freshman Mattie Williams (Lake George, N.Y.) and junior Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.) who finished in 57.94 and 58.34, respectively.

The Spiders had a similar performance in the 100-yard breaststroke as Purcell took home the top time at 1:04.67, followed quickly by freshman Sara Greene (Tega Cay, S.C.) at 1:05.38.

The freshmen duo of Claire O’Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) and Rachel Pak (Fairfax, Va.) finished second and third in the 200-yard butterfly, going 2:08.43 and 2:10.30, respectively. Another rookie in Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) added a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming at 23.99.

Gouger was back on top in the backstroke, finishing first with a time of 2:03.84 and teammate Ronan finished third at 2:06.68, just 0.22 seconds off the second place finisher. Purcell and Green were back as the one-two punch in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:19.42 and 2:23.19, respectively.

Medlin and senior Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.) were the top two finishers in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming in 51.75 and 52.32, respectively. O’Shaughnessy won her first collegiate event in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing nearly a second and a half faster than the closest competitor with a time of 57.34. Purcell added a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM, finishing just ahead of Duquesne’s Emma Brinton with a time of 2:04.70.

The A relay teams took home first place finishes in both the 400-yard freestyle and the 200 medley.

On the diving board, the senior Weiskopf finished first in the 1-meter and second in the 3-meter events. Freshman Ava Tuggle (Archdale, N.C.) showed her prowess in the air, finishing first in the 3-meter event and third in the 1-meter. Tuggle tallied a 243.20 score in the 3-meter and scored a 236.85 in the 1-meter. Weiskopf finished at 237.00 in the 3-meter and 238.00 in the 1-meter.

The Spiders are back in action tomorrow as they’ll take on the Davidson Wildcats who defeated the George Mason Patriots, 165.5-95.5 tonight.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Duquesne swimming and diving team dropped a 174-105 decision to host Richmond on the first night of competition of the Richmond Duals on Friday at SwimRVA.

The Dukes posted four first-place finishes on the night, including Cateri Christinis (Charleroi, Pa. / Oakland Catholic) in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:45.01), Emma Brinton (Landenberg, Pa. / Avon Grove) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.14), Sophia Perez (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.45) and Lauren Devorace (Rocky River, Ohio / Rocky River) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.01).

Freshman Sidney O’Donnell (Solon, Ohio / Solon) paced the Duquesne divers in both the 1-meter (234.65) and 3-meter (238.65) dives.

NEXT UP
The Dukes will square off with George Mason tomorrow on day two of the Richmond Duals. Diving begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Robins Center while swimming is slated to start at 10:15 at SwimRVA.
