After the 2019 World Para Swimming World Championships got off to a blazing start with five world records on night one, night two upped the ante with six.
Teenager Simone Barlaam (Italy) hit the first world mark of the night in the men’s S9 100 back, taking down Justin Zook’s seven-year-old mark in 1:01.22. France’s Ugo Didier took silver in 1:01.83 and Australia’s Timothy Hodge was third in 1:02.17.
Great Britain’s Alice Tai bested her own world record in the women’s S8 100 back by .05 seconds, going 1:08.04. She won the race by more than eight seconds. New Zealand’s Tupou Neifui was second in 1:16.37 and Tai’s teammate Megan Richter third in 1:17.08.
Russia’s Roman Zhdanov won the men’s S4 100 free in 1:21.28, a new world record. Japan’s Takayuki Suzuki earned silver in 1:22.38 and Korea’s Giseong Jo bronze in 1:24.88.
Israel’s Mark Malyar took 5.5 seconds off a six-year-old record in the men’s S7 400 free, going 4:33.64. Andrii Trusov, of the Ukraine, was second in 4:40.07. Argentina’s Inaki Basiloff rounded out the podium in 4:43.30; Basiloff’s swim was a new Americas record.
China’s Xinyi Wang broke the final individual world record of the night, winning the women’s S11 100 back in 1:16.40. She was four seconds ahead of the next-fastest finisher, which was Ukrainian Kateryna Tkachuk in 1:20.02. Tkachuk’s teammate Maryna Piddubna was just behind her for third place at 1:20.07.
China won the final event of the night as well, the mixed 20 point medley relay. The team of Linling Song (S6), Jingang Wang (S6), Quiping Peng (S4) and Lichao Wang (S5) combined to go 2:32.59, a new world record.

- The Netherlands’ Chantalle Zijderveld set a new European record in the women’s SM10 200 IM, going 2:27.00.
- Inaki Basiloff rounded out the podium in the men’s S7 400 free, a new Americas record.
