While competing in the women’s 50m backstroke semi-final in Budapest on day 4 of the 2019 World Junior Championships, 14-year-old Miriam Sheehan notched a new Puerto Rican National Record in the event.
Entering these Championships Sheehan’s personal best in this fast and furious event rested at a time of 29.95. The teen knocked almost a second off of that PB with a prelims swim of 29.02, a time that rendered her the new National Record holder. Sheehan’s outing this morning overtook the previous Puerto Rican standard of 29.37 set by Celismar Guzman at the 2018 CAC Games.
In tonight’s semi, Sheehan was slightly slower, but just slightly, hitting the wall in 29.05. She ultimately placed 11th overall.
However, Sheehan does have the 50m fly final tonight as well, where the Puerto Rican sits as the 5th seeded swimmer with a time of 26.74, another new national record.
She’s really impressive! Does anybody know the club team in PR that Miriam swims for?
Sheehan just finished 5th in the 50 fly with another NR – 26.67
And still only 14.
