The Brazilian quartet of Breno Correia, Marcelo Chierighini, Bruno Fratus and Pedro Spajari came together to win gold on night one of the 2019 Pan Ams in the men’s 400 free relay, setting a new Games Record in the process.
They combined for a time of 3:12.61, lowering the previous mark of 3:13.66 set at the 2015 Games in Toronto by the Brazilian team of Fratus, Chierighini, Matheus Santana and Joao De Lucca.
SPLIT COMPARISON
Like four years ago, Chierighini was the only member of the team that went sub-48. He improved by three-tenths, Fratus by four-tenths, and Correia led off almost half a second quicker than Santana did in Toronto.
Brazil, 2015 Pan Ams | Brazil, 2019 Pan Ams |
Santana – 49.28 | Correia – 48.82 |
de Lucca – 48.06 | Chierighini – 47.45 |
Fratus – 48.56 | Fratus – 48.18 |
Chierighini – 47.76 | Spajari – 48.16 |
3:13.66 | 3:12.61 |
The same four swimmers were slightly faster last month at the World Championships, clocking 3:11.99 to place sixth overall.
Spajari split nearly the exact same, while Fratus was four-tenths slower. Chierighini was slightly faster and Correia a bit slower than in Gwangju, though they’re harder to compare since they each had one lead-off.
Brazil, 2019 Worlds | Brazil, 2019 Pan Ams |
Chierighini – 48.10 | Correia – 48.82 |
Spajari – 48.14 | Chierighini – 47.45 |
Fratus – 47.78 | Fratus – 48.18 |
Correia – 47.97 | Spajari – 48.16 |
3:11.99 | 3:12.61 |
The victory in Lima marked Brazil’s sixth consecutive gold medal in this event, as they haven’t lost since the 1995 Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Chierighini’s 47.45 leg was the fastest in the field, and American Nathan Adrian was the only other swimmer to go sub-48 in 47.70 on their anchor leg. The U.S. won silver in 3:14.94, and bronze went to Mexico in 3:17.70.
That is one big man. Reminds me of Alain Bernard.
Anyone know where can we find the splits for the U.S.?
Never mind, got em from the other post. https://wrsd.lima2019.pe/PAG2019/resPAG2019/pdf/PAG2019/SWM/PAG2019_SWM_C73B1_SWMM4X100MFR———-FNL-000100–.pdf
Anyone know wtf happened to Shields. After that race I felt terribly bad for him.
Not only did you do that to him, but did you invite some of your friends to the party?
It’s time for him to retire. This has been going on for years, it’s embarassing.
