A full recap will come at the conclusion of the meet, but we couldn’t wait to share this one with you: Rockville-Montgomery’s Jack Conger swam a 46.15 in the 100 fly to win the open division.
Yes, that’s right, a 46.15. And he’s a “backstroker,” or something.
Though it won’t count officially as this is not a high school meet, that’s the fastest time ever swum by a high schooler in the 100 fly (faster than Shields, Crocker, Phelps, Schooling, or anybody else you can name) by almost four-tenths. The National High School Record sits at 46.50, set by Bolles’ Joseph Schooling at the Florida State meet a month ago.
Tom Shields still holds the 17-18 NAG Record in a 44.9, swum at NCAA’s as a freshman at Cal. Crocker is 2nd on that list in 45.96, also from his freshman year, with Crocker now 3rd.
We don’t know if Conger will get the chance to swim this race in high school competition, but if he does – look out for the record to go down. Just wait and see what he does in his other races at this meet – the imagination runs wild with delight. This is what makes Conger such a dynamite recruit for the Texas Longhorns. At 18, not only is he one of the best backstrokers in the country, period; he also puts up legendary times in the sprint frees, middle-distance frees, and butterfly races, and that’s just what he’s shown us so far.
Why won’t you allow the video to be posted? People should be able to see the race. All the swim sites should be working together, we are not the NFL. We are not a big enough sport for infighting. If you want to grow the sport then suck it up and support one another.
Impressive meet. I repeat that it’s incredible to have so many great young talents in this little part of USA.
Jack Conger is a natural talent we don’t see very often. He has no many muscles and his margin of improvements is giant. And yes he’s now much more than just a backstroker. He’s amazing on butterfly and on freestyle too. From the 50 to the 500! In the future and like most of versatile swimmers he will have choices to do on his schedule and on his training but what a talent!
The NCAP young girls are amazing. Behind Katie Ledecky and Janet Hu there are many other talents who will come soon like Lea Gwennap, Emily… Read more »
Add in 2 NAG records today by Reece Whitley of PCAC – 2:09.40 in 200 breast – as a 12 year old, and 28.08 in 50 breast.

Enough of the talk of “he could have gone this or that” for either swimmer.
You can only compare them based off the times they’ve actually gone. We don’t know where either of these guys are in training or how they are training, or their health etc.
Great swims for conger tonight, the rest of the weekend should be fast for him and the rest of the kids at the meet.
15-16 girls 800 FR NAG record for NCAP.
he just led off the 4×200 in 1:34.16.
^to LV2SRF95 on my last comment.
He was just at winter nationals and his state champs, why didn’t he “prove it” then?
Unlike conger, Murphy i assume is focused on swimming one event, the 200 back, at sc world champs. I’d say that if he had swum at jrs like he wanted to, or swum 100 fly rather than three relays at state champs, we would have definitely seen a sub 46 performance.
As well as 1:34 in the 200 free, and maybe a slightly faster 200 IM time than his 1:44 low.
He did swim both of those things at nationals, didn’t he?
Just saying he definitely had a “chance to swim it”
Stop hijacking the Jack Conger article with your innumerable assumptions about Ryan Murphy! Let them both enjoy the credit they earned.
