Joseph Schooling, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the 100 fly, finished 24th in prelims of the 100 fly at the 2019 FINA World Championships Friday morning, meaning he will not advance to the semifinal.
Schooling split 24.53/28.40 for a final time of 52.93. His season-best was 52.00 from the 2019 Japan Open in May, and his lifetime best, from Rio, was 50.39. It took 52.44 to make it back for semis in Gwangju.
The 24-year-old, of Singapore, also failed to advance out of prelims in the 50 fly; he finished 20th in 23.73. He did not enter the 200 fly this week and said in 2018 that he “thinks he’s done” with the event.
Schooling, an alum of the University of Texas, took bronze in the 100 fly at Worlds in both 2015 and 2017, but has been under :52 only once since his 50.78 Budapest swim.
Schooling will always be a great Longhorn legend and an Olympic champion. Stupid jokes will do nothing to change that.
He will be well remembered at Texas for his gold medal and all of his drama the last 2 years at UT.
I could honestly see that coming when he announced he was going back to his motherland.
You go back home as a national hero, everybody starts to spoil you and eventually you become soft…
the man just needs Eddie Reese crushing him 2, 3 times a day again.
Huge reality check
C’mon guys. He beat michael Phelps, set an Olympic record, and won a gold medal all in one race. It’s pretty difficult to stay motivated after all your dreams come true. These comments are disappointing.
I mean Le Clos did the same thing in London minus the Olympic record and yet he remained motivated after that… Maybe at this point it is all mental but it’s just disappointing considering how high expectations he got after Rio…
Kind of agree but this sh*t is embarrassing. At least he stole that endorsement deal. Good for him.
I hope he has other dreams, swimming or non-swimming related
After winning Rio, I would at least expected him to have a run similar to Le Clos after London… But he hasn’t been showing up since…. Hope he recovers in time for Tokyo, but at this point I think he will be come a one-and-done…
kristof milak was faster going out in his 200 fly
This is the least surprising thing I’ve read this week
Seriously, what’s been going on with him since Rio? I’m genuinely curious.
He dgaf
Sudden Fame and fortune beyond your comprehension at a young age. It’s NOTHING like winning gold in USA!!! He did not just win gold. He instantly became like a god to his country. First gold medal winner. Ever! Try wrapping your head around being THAT person.
Lol
