De Anza Cupertino Aquatics had a stellar final day at Santa Clarita Sectionals, snatching the men’s team title out of the clutches of BREA Aquatics who had held a healthy lead on Saturday. La Mirada Armada held onto its lead in the women’s meet to finish with a team title. BREA Aquatics finished a close second in both the men’s and women’s meets and claimed the combined-score crown.

Two swimmers picked up more 2020 Olympic Trials cuts on the final day of competition in Santa Clarita. Kenisha Liu, who had already won four events in the first three days, wrapped up her weekend with two more gold medals and two new Trials cuts. Liu lowered her seed time by 2.27 seconds to win the 200 IM in 2:16.01, coming to the wall 1.38 seconds under the standard of 2:17.39. She had been as fast as 2:15.76 in the summer of 2017 but that time has expired. (Note: USA Swimming states that times must be achieve in LCM and “must be posted in a USA Swimming sanctioned, observed or approved competition between November 28, 2018, and the 2020 Olympic Trials entry deadline.”) 12-year-old Teagan O’Dell from Chino Hills Aquatics dropped 3.94 seconds to finish second behind Liu in 2:20.07, just edging Crow Canyon’s Ana Jih-Schiff (2:20.56, -2.45 seconds).

Liu also scored a Trials cut in winning the 50 free with 25.91. Her swim bettered her entry time by .18 and made the Omaha standard by .08. Liu’s fastest 50m free is 25.71 from this same meet in the summer of 2017. Coming in second with 26.45 on Sunday was Mya Jackson of Cal State Bakersfield. Kailyn Winter of Quicksilver Swimming went 26.55 for third place.

Michael Tenney of BREA Aquatics and the University of Iowa added another Trials cut with a 2:04.04 win in the 200 IM. That lowered his previous PB by 1.95 seconds and put him under the standard by .05. Robert Moseley of Roadrunner Aquatics came to the wall in 2:06.31, just ahead of Benjamin Hayes (2:06.53) and Cole Reznick (2:06.62).

Orinda’s Spencer Daily narrowly missed punching his ticket to Omaha in the 50 free. He won with 23.25, .06 off the cut. Zachary McIntyre went 23.60 for second place while Felix Chiun was third with 23.68.

Other event winners:

• Liberty Williams of Riverside Aquatics Association won the 800 free in 8:55.24, more than ten seconds ahead of UC Santa Barbara’s Emily Boggess (9:05.94).
• Mason Romantic, 17, of Boulder City Henderson, dropped 14.95 seconds off his PB to win the 1500 free in 16:12.89.
• BREA Aquatics’ “A” relay beat La Mirada in the women’s 4×100 medley relay, 4:14.41 to 4:19.98. BREA fielded the quartet of Makayla Poloni, Jacqueline Basham, Kenisha Liu, and Ariel Wooden.
• Orinda Aquatics (Jolen Griffin, Tony Moore, Spencer Daily, and Michael Wheeler) dropped 3.37 seconds from their seed time to beat BREA Aquatics in the men’s 400 medley relay, 3:48.91 to 3:51.50.
