Backstroker Mark Cavanaugh Delivers Verbal Commitment To Missouri S&T

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mark Cavanaugh of Papillion Lavista High School and Sarpy County Swim Club of Bellevue, Nebraska has announced his intent to swim for Missouri S&T beginning in the fall of 2019. Primarily a backstroker, Cavanaugh boasts times in both backstrokes that would have scored the Miners points at the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference meet.

“Missouri S&T was the right fit for me academically.  I also enjoyed the members of the team and feel that I fit in well with the group.  I am looking forward to continuing my academic and swimming career as a Miner.”

At the 2019 Nebraska High School State Championship meet, Cavanaugh was runner up in the 50-yard freestyle (21.51) and took home a bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke (50.29). He swam all three backstroke races at the Speedo Championships Meet in Columbia, Missouri, taking 6th place in the 50-yard race (23.10), 12th in the 100 (50.45), and 16th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.53).

Best Times in Yards:

  • 100 back – 50.08
  • 200 back – 1:51.96
  • 100 fly – 50.84
  • 100 breast – 1:00.14
  • 200 IM – 1:57.24

Cavanaugh will be joining a Miners team that was runners up at the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, falling to Indianapolis 800-768. He will be bringing with him backstroke times that would rank him 2nd on the 2018-2019 team in the 100-yard backstroke and 4th in the 200 backstroke. He will be joining Nolan Fergus, Sam Weber, Daniel Matlock, Jay Mercer, and Connor Wiedemeier as members of the Class of 2023 and is the only backstroker joining the team.
