Italy’s European Championships bronze medalist Andrea Vergani claimed the top seed in the men’s 50m free on the final day of the 2019 Open Absoluto Invierno Comunidad de Madrid. Clocking 22.24, Vergani held off Italian teammate Luca Dotto, who will swim alongside the 21-year-old in tonight’s final with his morning mark of 22.80.
Marco Orsi lurks as the 3rd seeded swimmer in 22.87, while Santo Condorelli is also in the mix with his morning mark of 22.88.
Condorelli was back in the pool shortly to take on the men’s 100m fly, where he claimed lane 4 in an AM effort of 53.16. That held off Piero Codia, who touched in 53.29, but sets up a potentially heated final for tonight.
Additional top seeds came in the form of Silvia Di Pietro‘s 25.70 in the women’s 50m free, Svetlana Chimrova‘s 59.09 in the women’s 100m fly, Matteo Ciampi‘s 3:57.13 in the 400m free and Evgeny Rylov‘s 1:59.68 in the 200m back.
European Championships multi-medalist Simona Quadarella was in the water, too, staking her claim on the women’s 400m free with her time of 4:16.43.
This I know is controversial, but why does Santo Condorelli keep getting so much headline coverage on SwimSwam? Individually, he has finalled in only 2 international competitions, one 4 years ago & one 3 years ago, and tho close in the 100 free at Rio, never medalled. At 2018 he won 1 World relay medal, swimming for Italy. His individual best times are from 2015, 4 years ago. Leaving aside his country-shopping-for-Olympic-chances and his ‘ritual’ of flashing his middle finger to his father before races (see what I did there?), what’s the news here? Surely there are others who deserve some coverage besides this guy, at least for now?
Cuz santo is a legend
This is the first meet where he’s been in an English language headline in 2019, and the last time he got a headline was at SC Worlds, where he helped his country break a National Record. We’ve written maybe 3000 articles in that time period.
If you think he’s getting too much headline coverage, you’re probably hanging out on our Italian-language channel.
Braden you are the mean deep respect for the support !!
Let’s see when he wins big!!!!
Santo has been a consistent player at the world class level in the 50 & in the 100. He’s also got an electric personality & is someone we like to see get coverage.
Well said my friend !!! And he is working real hard!!!
didn’t see what you did there – pls explain more
The hair.
The hair is magnificent.
And posted times in the Olympic year and the run up, that he couldn’t come close to duplicating in four years of college.
And win was..: great 52.28 in the 100 fly.
Even greater the 2.07.12 swum by Margherita Panziera in the 200 back.
Solid swims and wins also for Quadarella (4.07 in the 400 free) and Vergani (22.02 in the 50 free).
Italian Swimming looking strong
they will be strong this summer in Korea as well
