NE-10 Champs: Assumption Women/Bentley Men Win, 6 Records Broken

2019 Northeast-10 Championships

The Northeast-10 Championships closed with records made and streaks broken along the way. The women of Assumption and the men of Bentley have won their respective 2019 NE-10 titles.

The SCSU men won in 2018 while the women had a 2 year streak since 2017. Since 2004, SCSU (Southern Connecticut State) had won 25 titles as a combined men’s and women’s program, but this year they were shut out, placing 2nd in the men’s meet and 3rd in the women’s.

The 2019 edition of the meet also featured 6 new conference open and meet records. Among the record-breakers was Assumption’s Shannon Quirk. Quirk’s first record was made after a brillant race with Bentley’s Melissa Viator. Quirk paced off of Viator until the last 150, where she took off to finish in a 10:24.09. Viator finished right behind with her 10:25.34. Quirk also won the 1650 FR in a 17:25.57) to defend her title.

SCSU’s Leo Laporte broke not one, but 2 records at the 2019 conference meet. Laporte won the 100 fly (48.57) and 200 fly (1:47.56), both in record-breaking fashion. Other NE-10 records broken this year include:

The next day, Quaglia looked to defend her title in the 100 back. However, she was even with SCSU’s Morgan Fernald during the entire race. In the end, Quaglia not only defended her title, but shared it with Fernald. The duo tied with a final time of 57.44. On Sunday, Quaglia then won the 200 fly with a 2:03.66, securing her 3rd title.
